Blowing 11mph Gusting 30mph

Postby bazzamac » Sat Nov 18, 2017 3:04 pm

So if the wind is blowing 11mph, rig a 17m Turbine, how do you deal with it when it's gusting 30mph ? Or would common sense say "wait for another day" ?

i'd wait for another day because no matter what size you rig it's going to be awful to ride in

if someone was forcing me to ride on a day like that id probably put up something like a 10m with a twintip and just sit in the water during the lulls

if its more like 11mph average only with the occasional gust of 30, i wouldn't ride because (a) 11mph sucks and (b) it would be a safety risk with a big kite because (c) it usually means weather is approaching

Yeah wait for another day.
Even with my C2 17 I wouldn't want to deal with gusts much above 20mph. 30 would be hectic.

Is this a trick question?

What does your 8-9 years of kiteboarding experience tell you?

If you want to live. Rig for the gust. What I mean by that is take a kite out that can handle a 30mph gust. If the 17m doesn't handle that (I doubt it dows!) then rig smaller.

Then select a board that can handle the wind range also.

What is the gust to lull ratio? is there more 30mph than 11 mph or vise /versa? That would determine for me what board to use.
In general terms I would rig a smaller kiter say 10m and partner it with a bigger board. that way the 10m can handle the 30mph gusts and the door size boards can ride out the lulls.

But if there is more lull than gust I would definitely go hydrofoil and 8m or 6m. The hydrofoil can easily ride at 11mph and still be in control at 30mph. You just change your style from non powered to powered hydrofoiling.

No not a trick question, recently moved to Texas and this is the first time I've experienced the northerly fronts coming through with such a huge difference between average wind speed and gusts. Obviously common sense tells me to wait for another day.

we have winds like this often...
I rig for the expected upper range and wait through the lulls. (its on shore)
I guess I could wait another day, but likely it will be the same... haha

cheers

10m and a door type board is doable but for sure no fun. Skip the day.
