Yesterday while kiting at Sunset Beach in Cape Town I went far out in the bay to intercept one of the Volvo Ocean Race boats, called Turn the Tide on Plastic, as they came charging across towards the beach. I met up with them about a mile out and rode along for a while, but there was a hotshot kiter following them, and he continued when they tacked and headed back west. Turns out it was Kevin Langaree and he posted a great video of it as KEVVLOG #35 on Youtube.
So today I was riding at Bloubergstrand late in the day, about 5:30, and again went out a bit to try to reach another VOR boat, Brunel, who also had a kiter nearby them, plus a helicopter. Then they took off west and easily outran me, but then the kiter took off and kept flying higher and higher. They went far across the bay and the kiter must have gotten over 10 times the height of the VOR mast and as far downwind, with the helicopter following along, presumably filming. I presume this was an extreme version of the "skywalk" by Alex Thompson with his IMOCA boat Hugo Boss.
Question is, was it Kevin again or what it Nick Jacobsen this time. He's crazy enough to do it!
