Recommend me 12-13m kite for strapless freestyle w/ excellent low end?

Postby omg » Fri Dec 15, 2017 8:36 pm

I have 10m Neo 2017 but need a bigger kite for a bit lower wind. The kite needs to have
1) quick turning and reaction to bar input
2) excellent low end
3) decent depower, otherwise grabless tricks would be hard to excute :/

What kite fits the bill, please? I have heard the 12m Neo is a bit slow?

Thanks!

I can definitely recommend OR Flite 12m
Hits the three points you mention anyway.
2016 version on amazon for $650 right now is a steal...

My bad, looks like that deal is gone...
Great kite anyway. Very responsive and very well may be best low end available in a 12m tube kite.

I'm very happy with my LF Solo 12m for strapless freestyle, especially with my finless skim in as low as 10 knots (73 kg).

so i have an 11m, 9m and 7m neo...love them to death...but the 11m doesn't feel like the magic of the 9 and 7,...the grunt; my 9m is weathered, and my 11m is still crispy, when my 9m busts I'm phasing out to a 10m and eventually phase out the 11m, 10m and 7m = neo happiness,...i imagine the 12m neo sucks in that regard also

anyways what I'm trying to say is i have a 12m airush ultra, drifts like the neo in light wind...isnt the gruntiest kite, but it complements the neo good, strapless foil/surfboard freestyle is good

12m solo has more low end, but doesn't drift like the ultra

11m neo sucks to foil with in light winds, too heavy, 9m is good, recoverable quick, but i don't use my 11m anymore after getting the ultra, only powered surfboard wind

12m solo sucks for strapless freestyle when its powered, its hard to depower the kite...ultra depowers just like the neo

never used a mono, i would tell you to demo a mono and ultra 12m,...and realize the strapless freestyle in light winds suck on a regular surfboard, ur not getting good air in 12-15 knots, maybe if u weigh 100 lbs, but on a foil u can get a lot of air in 12-15 knots! currently riding a slingshot surf foil and a converter, want to eventually get a gofoil

I would +1 on the airush ultra 12m for low-end riding. It doesn't have as much grunt as the Neos that I have tried but it is definitely faster.

I agree with jespin that 12m low-end strapless riding isn't the most fun, but those would by my recommendations.
Or get a foil. airush just came out with a board called the mini monster convertible which is a strapless board and foil. some videos look impressive for a two in one foil board but haven't tried it myself.

I replaced my 12m solo after flying the Flite. Flite turns quite a bit faster and has better low and top end IMO.
And weighs in about .25 lb less than solo
Still love my smaller solos, but at 12m size canopy I like having three struts for when the wind picks up..

Another vote for the Airush Ultra. All the pluses are mentioned above.

Wow, check out all the pimping on this thread... Why don’t you just list the kite properties and don’t mention the brand. Or is it just Core bashing that gets that treatment?🙄 I don’t mind you mentioning brands but then give all brands equal and fair treatment, please. Not for the brands’ sake, for the consumer’s sake! If I were to recommend a Core kite here I’ll be sure to get hammered. Seriously, what a shame...

I have a quiver of 2016 monos 12-9-7 I've been using to strapless surfboard and hydrofoiling for 1 1/2 seasons. About 60-70 sessions, most on the 12 and 9.

They have a lot of power per size. This is good on the SB, it's easy to moderate the power with an even an progressive power delivery on bar sheeting. It's not on off. They steer great powered and depowered. They drift well, are easy to fly but are nimble to fly with one hand.
Negative is they don't like to be pushed at the high end.

On the foil they are great because they fly in super light winds, deliver a good power spike to get up on down stroke, and I've never dropped one on even "crazy fly downwind out of control on failed foil gybe". They just drift back and catch.
Negative is that sometimes they just feel too powerful and I'm sheeting out a lot.

Finally, the durability/ longevity of the canopy trailing sections is under question. All the sheeting out I am doing on HF and resulting flutter in canopy, is putting those little spider wrinkles in the canopy just in front of the TE thick material. I never leave my kites fluttering on the beach.
