Help needed: XR5 and carbon drive Beginner

Postby Feseroni » Thu Dec 28, 2017 5:15 am

Hi Guys,

I know you get this question 3 times or more per day but I could not find information for my specific conditions.

I have been coming to the forum a lot in the last couple of months looking for wisdom and I’m here again looking for more. I just got done with my lessons and it’s time to buy some equipment. I’m still learning to control the board and working on extending my rides, no upwind skills yet.

Some information about me:

Location: Panama
Weight 75kg - 165 lbs
Conditions: 15 to 25 knots on most days with some wave chop

Equipment:

Kite: I pretty much have my mind on a 12m core xr5. I believe it can support my progression for the next couple years. Plan on getting a 9m later on. I got a nice deal on a new one. Any advice or recommendation? I also considered a catalyst v1 and a ss rally.

Board: I’m torn between a crazyfly allround 145x42 or a LF carbon drive 143x42. I had some problems getting on the board at the beginning and now I’m somewhat consistent but I would still like a big board to progress faster. Do you think I’ll be overpowered with these board size and the 12m kite at the upper range of the wind?

Before anyone suggest, I do not have access to look at used equipment before buying, that’s the reason I do not want buy a used.

Thanks a lot for your advice and time.

15-25kn and 75kg? I'd be looking into 11m at most. Go shorter on the board as well, 135-140 tops. Just give yourself a couple of steady 20knots days and you'll be riding fine.

Agreed.

75kg/15+ knots = 11m. Next size down would be 8m.

Have never used an XR5 but had Rallys until recently - will get you going easily and very importantly will take a lot of abuse while you progress.

agreed with what has been said about kite size and board.

at 175 lb i learned on an all rounder 135x39, now i have a rockered 138*39.5. for an all rounder you don't need that big of a board...

unless you have flat water which doesn't seem to be the case then get 10m or 11m you will have much more fun. also even on flat water 12m session in 25 knots is fun here and there to try and break some record but a lot more fun on smaller kite, tons of stuff to practice except for extreme airstlyle move...

You chose the perfect kite for you and your conditions, 12m XR5, yes, you’ll need the 9m eventually, but I think you need a smaller board. Have fun & 🤙

I'd say if the wind is more often on the lower range then the 12m would be perfect, but definitely get a smaller board to compensate for the size of the kite and the LF Carbon Drive 139x41 might be a good compromise over the 136.

Thanks for your advice. I changed the kite size and now I’m looking at a shinn monk 137x44. I think the extra width will help me to progress faster at the beginning .

Thanks a lot

If you really want the carbon Drive, there is a smokin deal at kiteboarding.com: https://kiteboarding.com/proddetail.asp ... rbon_drive
