Beta on Kiting in Jupiter Fl

Postby skideeppow » Wed Jan 03, 2018 12:19 am

was going to head down to visit my brother. He lives in Jupiter, about 10 min from water.
What do i bring for a Feb kite session? Foil Board? I weight about 215.
How steady is the wind?

Any beta would be appreciated.

february is kind of a weird month because winter is usually pretty lame in general, but sometimes we get some ok fronts that move through. march/early april are usually better when the spring southerlies kick in.

here's some data, I'm 145 lbs. i kite every day that it's windy enough to ride, pretty much.

2017: 14 windy days, all on 12m about half on foil half on twintip/surfboard. Wind 10-20 kts.
2016 i didn't live here because i got sick of there being no wind all the time :P
2015 there was no wind in Feb, only rode 5 times on my 12m.
2014 was worse, 4 sessions all on 13m.
2013 was good, 9 sessions, half on 9m half on 12m.

for 215 lbs i'd def recommend bringing a foil, as you can see it more than doubled my sessions for 2017. the wind is rarely over 20 kts, and it's weak humid florida wind with a decent current in the ocean, so you generally rig bigger than usual anyway. its all really hit or miss since the wind is mostly frontal this time of year.

as far as temperature goes, weather is usually really nice. ocean is a beautiful turquoise color and very clear. air and water temp both in the 70s... i think last feb i was wearing a 2mm shortsleeve shorty most of the time, with a 3/2 full once in a while when the air temp dips a bit.

Check out the local shops and give them a call. If it was that bad there wouldn't be any shops in FL... http://www.jupiterkiteboarding.com/weather
The statistics for Feb. look reasonably good.
