How to flush sand out of a foil kite

Postby plummet » Fri Jan 19, 2018 10:53 pm

So.... After 13 years of kiting and flying foil kites I have finally swamped one completely and had to swim in. In the process it fill up with sand and water going through surf.

Any tips on flushing out the sand from inside the kite?

Allow it to dry completely. If the air is humid, salt in the sand and cloth will pull water out of the air keeping things damp and sand sticks. I will often rinse with fresh water and use little teacup hooks to hang it by the trailing edge out of the sun and wind. Once its dry shake the sand to the tips where the dirt outs are.

I used to inflate my foil with a fan and had it hanging under a ceiling fan. Keeping the air moving inside and out dries it in a fraction of the time.

If it’s a flysurfer there is no need. One the sand dries it will work it’s way to the wingtips via the internal drainage channel on the trailing edge as you continue to fly the kite. Then you simply open the wingtip Velcro pocket and empty the sand out. This is why the channel and wingtip pockets exist.

To dry mine after a big swim, I inflate them and let them sit in the garage for a day or two.

Flying them dry seems to be the best way, but sometimes this is not possible immediately after the swim.

I hung it from my trampoline net and hosed through the air vents and out the wing tip Velcro pocket thing. Then left it to dry. Seemed to work.

I used it in same way by hanging it under ceiling fan and it worked for me. Thank you.

Bought this one for my house but it is also superb for drying kites. So inflate the Soul, let this one run and after a day it should be totally dry.
