Cape town / Witsand - Kite sizes mid February

Postby ral » Sun Feb 04, 2018 2:28 pm

Will be in CT over the next three weeks.
I am planning on travelling with a 6,8 and 11m Bandit. Plan is to start in CT and then maybe to travel South East towards Hermanus and Witsand.

I'm 90kg and will be on a twin tip.

I know the wind is plenty strong enough in along the Blouberg spots, but does the wind drop off much once you move East of the cape in Mid february?
I'm wondering whether to also try and cram in my 14m bandit but this will mean I can bring very little else in terms of clothes etc! If it would only get
occasional use I'll stick with the 6, 8 and 11 and sit out the low wind days.

6,8,11.
Sounds good to me. :thumb:
I'm also about 90kg, ride TT. Was in Witsand last year January. Got good use from my 6.

Witsand is not a TT spot.

There's witsand beach near Scarborough on the peninsula and Witsand 300km east of CT, correct me if I'm wrong.
Witsand beach is a great wave spot but you can have a good time there on your TT as well. I was there last week, 7 and 5m where the most used sizes. Can be windy when Blouberg is still waiting..

I kited the other Witsand 14 years ago, great spot with flat water in the river and waves on the ocean. Lot of sharks so they say. Lots of wind when I was there that year in February. Definitely worth visiting and with your combo you're probably fine most of the day.

Have fun!

Correct, two different Witsands. Both kitable with TT and directional, both fun, but the OP means the one 300km east. And don't stop there. If the forecast is SW go on to Stillbaai where you can ride in SW.

Good thing you didn't tell me.. I might not have had so much fun on my TT if I knew this

No, Witsand is excellent for twin tips - there not many places where you can get such flat water when the wind is howling. Of course, you can ride out through the river mouth to the sea side of the lagoon if you want waves.

You could even leave the 11m if you want. Plan for your first few days:

Strand Wednesday - 11m:

Melkbos Thursday and Friday - 11m and 8m. Blaauwberg Saturday - 8m:

WitsandS (Misty Cliffs) Sunday - 6m:

Witsand (Infanta) Monday - 8m:

Struisbaai Tuesday - 6m with a couple of holes cut out:

Going East from CPT along the coast, you actually move further South first - wind normally stronger around the points. Cape Point gets it first and a day later Cape Agulhas (the real southern tip). So you can actually chase wind up the coast all the way to Still Bay and Sedgefield if you want. Further East the wind is a rumour.

Hi

The wind starts tapering in Feb so I would definitely (as a local) bring your 11 and perhaps even consider buying longer lines. Especially if you are heading up the coast.
