Oh nice, I will definitely try to go back to OBX soon, April maybe.
Like Nick said it depends on kite and if you want to go for distance downwind or cross wind.
For cross wind I send kite fairly hard for early lift and also pop a bit earlier so I retain a lot of cross wind speed, and I redirect kite fairly quickly too.
It's weird because when you are quite efficient with your pop technique you don't go as far downwind anymore, when you pop you go straight up
You want good pop for power but kite needs to be deep in window, on C kite by sending it harder and popping when kite is still deep while sheeting in all the way, sends you downwind nicely then you can keep kite back for a while and go for a later redirect and heliloop or downloop depending on what you are doing. Usually I don't pop as hard when i go for those but popping early works well since you still have plenty of horizontal speed that you can redirect downwind...
