Kitesailing around the world

Postby Firehawk2047 » Tue Feb 27, 2018 5:19 pm

Hi all!

I am new to the forum - I'm very happy to join this community.

I wanted to ask for your feedback on a concept I am thinking about.

I want to start a fun side project to create a boat that can circumnavigate using a kite power system and set a world speed record. I currently have a sailboat captains license (24 meters long class) and will soon get open ocean qualifications. As an aerospace engineer it seems obvious there is a much more efficient way of propelling a sailboat, by essentially moving the wings higher up in the atmospeheric boundary layer. Furthermore, circumnavigating with this technology would bring it in the spotlight and could play a role in accelerating its adoption for things such as renewable power generation and better kites in general.

Now, the starting point is the kite iself and thus I was wondering if you could recommend me any kites that could be used for this purpose i.e. high power delivery and quite robust. The kite would be inflatable and it would be released and retreived from the top of the mast automatically. It would be physically attached to the ship at the base of the mast (to mimise moments) via a single-line dyneema tether. This line would go to a small control box which essentially would simulate a human operator.

What do you think? :D

Inflatable and deployed and retrieved from the top of mast automatically? sounds like a hell of a lot more than a side project. Good luck.

Look at the kites the container ships use...it’s a foil, not inflatable.

Have a look here: https://project.kiteboat.com/gallery/

As for which kite to use, perhaps an ASV Rescue Kite if you can find one. Good luck with launching from the top of the mast.

What mast? Other kiteboats don't have masts...

Inflatable so that it can re-launched if it crashes. And the mast of the sailboat seems to be the best place to launch/retrieve since it is the tallest point. I was thinking it would be easy to have a pulley system raising it, then releasing when at the top. The tether would then be raised again through the same pulley sistem when it would be time to retrieve it and I would simply pull the tether through the pulley at the top of the mast, brining it it in towards the mast. Or I suppose I could crash land it next to the boat then pull it onboard since it is inflatable. :)

I think the reason SkySails uses a ram-air foil kilte is to have more power and less weight. However if it does come down in the water it would be a pain to re-launch it. Hence this is more useful for this purpose perhaps.

But I was thinking of mounting this on a sailboat as additional power / alternative for the sails.

This is quite awesome! It seems the concept does work and others are using it. The only thing is it is not autonomous and handling it manually would not really work for long trips. Hmm I tried to find an ASV Rescue Kite online but it seems to be quite specialised (probably really expensive).

Wouldn't a light wind kite (e.g. Slingshot RPM 14m) be powerful enough to pull a ship?

I'd love to hear about your other main projects ;)

What about filling the kite with helium?

The RPM is anything but a LW kite.

If you want to use a off the shelf kite then you'll either need to stick to a small craft like this:

or use a hydrofoil like kiteboat, but even kiteboat uses a 25 or 30m kite.
