Min wind for king gee 150x50, contra 15m and 85kgs

Postby gomi » Sat Mar 10, 2018 7:53 am

Hi,

Welcome all.

What do you think is the minimum wind to stay upwind on cabrinha contra 15m and shinn king gee 150x50?
My weight is 85 kg (177lbs). With all the neoprene needed at this time of year it will probably come to 90kgs.
I know the only real answer is go out and try it since there are so many variables, but it's so cold now that I would like to know if I have at least a good chance. Wouldn't want to go out just to swim around in freezing cold water.
The forecasts says that it will blow 12-14 knots on the weekend at my spot in Poland.

Cheers

I weigh 82kg and used to have exactly the same board and kite combination, and in 12-14 knots could stay upwind no problem. It was my summer lightwind kit.

Correction: my King Gee was 146x46

You should have no problem.

I am 80 kg and with my Contra 15m and King Gee 146x46 I can comfortably stay upwind at 9 knots, I would be jumping at 11 or 12. I would say that the key at those wind speeds is not having lulls. 5 gusting 10 knots won’t work.

cool. what's the lowest wind you tried it successfully in?

thanks for all the replies! didn't expect so many people to have the same setup :) can't wait to try it out!

In less than about 12 knots the lulls just make it boring. If you want to go in less wind then an Ozone Zephyr (17m) which also has no pulleys would probably be better (that's what I'd use now instead of a Contra 15m).

7 knots on flat water, with line extensions.
