What's the best waist harness?

Postby kitegirls » Sat Apr 14, 2018 6:20 am

My DaKine waist harness really makes my sides/ribs sore especially after the first hour and especially after multiple days in a row of kiting. What's the best waist harness out there that puts the least amount of squeeze on your torso? I know people swear by the Ride Engine but I have heard more complaints than good. I have also seen 2 become detached from the kiter and fly off.

I also hate the pressure on my sides and ribs from a waist harness - I solved the problem by using a seat harness.

Concerning Ride Engine I have heard more good than complaints...I would try a waist harness with a stiff shell. For me that was a revelation compared to conventional harnesses. There are a number now with different characteristics in terms of how much the stiff part wraps around the torso, e.g. Prolimit, Mystic, Ride Engine, Ion, NP.

I've had a few harnesses recently,

First, I really enjoyed was the light feel of the original mystic majestic but the hook and pad were very heavy. I ran it will a dynabar in the end.
I then changed to a brunotti smart-shell as I felt the mystic was not offering long term support as I was conscious of big jolts from kite pull. Good harness very light, lighter than a ride engine and doesn't take on water weight. I did change to a ride engine as the padding is a little more plush inside and it has smaller buckles that won't scratch my surfboard like the brunotti has.

For me, the ride engine harness really needs to be on tight as if you use a hook the dish can torque around and put pressure on your side. I have a 2016 production RE and I think the 3rd revision (fixing the waist band and velcro) in 2018 really does look like the best harnesses out there, I might get one in September when the 2019 range launches.

If you're looking for a ridged harness designed to minimize torso squeezing and offers a "ladies" fit, I'd say your best option would be the new Mystic Gem harnesses.

The new Clickerbar 4.0 s-bar is a nice improvement over the older versions and will give you the piece of mind knowing this harness will not come unclipped. :thumb:

Pretty sure Ion makes a girl specific rigid harness as well. I think it was Colleen Carol that was on a video about it?

Which holes do you put the straps through in the mystic clickbar to prevent strap wear on the mystic gem harness?

Just moved from an old North Airstyler to an ION Apex CS15 and I really like it.

Sort of took a chance but had an hour out at Camber Sands recently and was really happy.

Didn’t notice it during the session but found I wasn’t trying to pull the harness back around from my side like the old one.

Was a bit sceptical of hardshell to begin with as they’re all a f)£king rip off like the industry in general but really happy with it.

The stupid and correct answer is the waiste harness that fits and suits your body shape. Some love, some hate hard shell etc. Even trying them against a pull does not guarantee long term comfort. My only contribution is, don't forget that the size and shape of the spreader bar can make a difference. Wider spreader bars can reduce rib pinch etc.
