Hello,
I used to live in SXM but moved away 2-3 years ago.
I don't know what's going on there since Hurricane Irma...
Life changed a lot since, that's for sure.
Back then, there was only two tiny spots allowed to rig and launch (Baie orientale, Observatoire aux oiseaux Le Gallion)

Like the other poster said, a lot has changed in St. Martin/Maarten after IRMA. The best bet is to talk to Wind Adventures and they can give you an idea of what to expect on the island these days.

Manu and Cecile run the center and their son is Theo Demanez, a rising star in kitesurfing. Orient Bay is super beautiful, but surf on the island is more likely to happen in the winter months with north swells from cold fronts that end up in the Atlantic. I hope you make it there as it is a great island that is known for the nightlife.

From what i heard since Irma, kitesurfing is better (more space to rig and launch) but nightlife is way worse... Lots of businesses closed, lots of people left and way less tourists in 2018...

I'm here since yesterday I'll be able to study...
I've sailed this morning to orient bay, few wind but space to launch.

Stopping on the island for a day with a cruise liner, curious if there's anywhere to rent some gear or sign my wife up for a lesson?

I windsurfed in Orient Bay many years ago, and it's a good kite spot. Le Gallion also looked like an awesome flat water spot, but I read somewhere a long time ago that Le Gallion is closed to kites... I have no idea if that's true or not, but worth checking. Maybe the old rules are completely abandoned after the hurricane? You can find some good YouTube videos (I pasted some below).
