Boosting only one way

Postby tkachuk » Thu Apr 19, 2018 12:41 am

I am an intermediate kiter, almost 60 years old, who has been kiting ~3 years and boosting 10 - 15 feet for a year. Problem is that, I can only get decent height going goofy. Every time I try regular, the kite gets behind me and I bomb out or worse. How common is only being able to boost decently only one way? Any tips? Dont ask for a video as itd be brutal to watch.

I've been kiting for about 15 years. I only jump one way.

I've started to learn to jump switch, but to be honest it isn't as much fun or as satisfying. It feels like writing with my left hand, just a bit weird.

The way I approach kiting is that it is supposed to be fun, I'm not a pro, I don't need to be able to jump both ways. I use one tack to get up wind, the other for fun and tricks.

But if you want to learn, just keep at it. You brain works through repetition, so you've just got to keep at it. Having the kite bomb the wrong way - pulling on the wrong hand. Send the kite, take your back hand off for a grab. Your front hand will automatically pull and redirect the kite. Make sure you're holding near the center of the bar.

Kiting since 18 years.
Jump mainly to one direction.
Just do what you like...no need to do both ways.
If you want both...just train to get used to it...

f*** that. You ow it to yourself to at least get functional jumping both ways. Opens up a world of fun.

Its a spectrum. One style, jumping one tack at the one extreme, ambidextrous in all styles on the other.

Most of us are in the middle somewhere, but only jumping one tack is setting the bar pretty low.

Lots of us tend to favour different airs on each tack. They are usually just different flavours of the same basics.

ie. S bend on one tack and tantrum on the other. Both are basically a forward rotation.

I jump both ways.I only loop one way(powered loops) I actually went from jumping better goofy to jumping the other way better, not sure what that was all about? (12 years ago). So now my looping side is my weaker height side, very frustrating lol Even the magnetic poles switch every so often. Only tip I can think of is to practice more.

It takes time to learn how to do tricks switch. Keep with it and you'll figure it out. It sometimes helps to take video so you can pinpoint what the problem is. I always learn my tricks both ways. It gives you something to do on a light wind day. When it's nuking I don't like trying new stuff.

Very common.

However, I do transition jumps very well one side only (I think, is 8m good?). Can't jump in that direction at all. I recon you're not 'stomping' the board well. To stomp the board proper is easier in transition coz of commitment and kite movement to change direction. That will pull you out from crashing.

Yes your normal - everyone has there weird moves that are only one turn away.

What I noticed from my own kaos crash bandicoot style - is that most times regardless of co-ordination, most people do not physically spot their landing point the same. Then its just a guess where ever the hell I am haa haa :cool2:

I might not be a trickster but at least I can stud a jump in both directions....

Get out there and practice. That's all it takes.

Kiting 18 years. Can only really boost one direction. The origin of that: when I started kiting, on 2 line kites, it was so *#*@! hard I didn't waste energy trying to jump the side I was less comfortable with. My "good" side was my stronger side from windsurfing & came from the locations I windsurfed - all starboard tack jumping. Now all the places I regularly kite are also starboard tack jumping, so I don't worry about jumping on the other tack.
