Noticed a number of kite stores here in New Zealand and also over in Australia and selling off 2017 product at 30% off RRP, sometimes as much as 50% off RRP.
I imagine when the 2019 stock turns up in a few months the current 2018 gear will also go on sale.
So I'm wondering where that leaves the used market. If you can get brand new kit at 50-70% of RRP, how much can you expect to pay for used kit that is less than 5 years old?

The above answer is more right than you know. Here in the US I’ve seen anything from five-year-old kites being sold for 75% of the retail price to new model kites being sold at 50% of their price having been used maybe three times.
Generally, you can bet on about 75% of retail after a year, and 50% after about two years. From there it levels off until stuff gets about five years old. Again, this is generally and for the US market.

It depends a lot on brand.
I know some people who buy with a plan to resell with minimum depreciation and always ride new gear. I just don't have the discipline or intelligence to understand the kite market. I sell gear when I'm done with it so I like to sell used gear on eBay with a $1 start and no reserve.

Assume a $2000 kite
Ex demo 30% $1400
1 year old 50% $1000
2 years another 25% $750
3 Years another 25% $562.5
4 years +... Good luck

That's about right in the UK. To which I would add, last year's kites but new also 30% off.

Some shops in the US have crazy blowout sales at 50% of MSRP a year later (on brand new gear), if they can afford to sell them at that price it really shows how much markup there is when it first comes out...
When selling used gear I usually start at half the msrp and go down from there based on the condition it's in. Some brands a little more, some a little less... like I sold a 7m fuel for about $100 that was in pretty good shape, just because no one buys 7m fuels.

I think that some of those 50% off blow out prices is at cost or below cost just to quit dead stock that will be worth even less in a few months time when next years "turns like a 4m with the power of a 20m sooooo much better than last years" kite is released.

New graphics. That's 90% of it IMO. The kite may perform pretty much identically to last years model, but slap new graphics on it & it's "new & improved". Occasionally, there actually IS a notable improvement made ... but equally, sometimes the newer model is
worse than the preceding version.
