Ozone Edge V8 15m

Postby BillyGoatGruff » Sat May 05, 2018 9:04 am

Looking for a light wind kite and quite like the look of the Ozone Edge V8 15m. I am currently riding a 14m Naish Torch from 13/14mph onwards but need something from 10mph+. I am 81kg and ride a Shinn Monk 134/42cm, live in UK.

How good is the 15m for light winds and general boosting in the 15 to 20mph range ? all info appreciated.

I'm also looking at a 15m kite for summer and the 15m Edge V8 is an option. I'd like a 15m Zephyr but Ozone don't make one so I'll probably go for a 17m Zephyr for 10-15 knots then change down to my 12m Enduro V2. UK south coast (eastern Solent), 82kg, North Select 138/41. I can't boost (the truth is that my left knee has long term damage and I can't risk a dodgy landing).

Did you guys considered getting LW board like >150cm size? Could be cheaper than getting new kite and easier to change board at the spot then kite.

I've got Mitu 5'8 but just want to be able to use my TT in summer light winds when the water's a bit crappy for a SB.

If you're just looking to cruise around in light winds and have a bad knee, skip the big kite and just get a hydrofoil. With your 12m enduro you'd probably get going in sub 10 knots if it stays in the air. I know you've probably already heard this "get a foil" lecture, but 4 years ago I made the same mistake as you. Bought a big 17m kite for light wind days on the TT. Saved me a few sessions, but it's just not the same as riding powered up on a faster kite in decent winds.

Truth is, unless if you have nice superflat water + constant light wind + can do some freestyle tricks, buying a big kite is a waste of money, as there are alternative kite activities in those winds that are a lot more fun. You're not going to boost in 10 knots, and big kites are slow and boring. In flat water and stable light wind you can park them and do unhooked freestyle tricks, yes. But with your bad knee, that's not an option. I sold my 17m after 1 season, and got me a North Nugget to cruise around and practice strapless on in lighter winds + 12m kite. Definitely more fun than underpowered TT riding. Then last season to increase my low end to sub10 knots, I started foiling. Haven't touched my nugget since (unless nice waves) because for those light summerwind, sunny cruise-around days, nothing beats a foil in terms of low end, fun, and zen-cruise-factor.

So spend the money on a freeride foil instead, dedicate 10-20 hours on foiling only to get the hang of it, and you'll be cruising up and down the coast in 10 knots on your 12m.

I don't want a foil, but thanks all the same.

Since you're constantly tormenting me on Core threads, I have to ask, why the fixation with Ozone? Why not at least demo a Core LW, there are currently 3 15 mtr flavours to choose from. or do you just love flying kites made by a bleach company?

No fixation with Ozone. Just want no pulleys, low V, will work fine with one of my bars (24" with 27.5m lines), and can choose from a range of nice colours.

So you're saying you're prejudiced against Core because of colour, it's a black thing yeah? So racist.

The first three are deal breakers, the last not. But if you sent me a new 2018 15m XR5 LW (with the bar that needs to be used with it) for half price I might be pursuaded to overcome my 'colour prejudice'. :thumb:
