Interesting theory, edt. I'm inclined to believe you. So what side do you tape the kite? Inside or out?
doesn't matter.

Personally I use a Blenderm tape that you can find in medical shops.

It is almost invisible, very flexible and with one tape on each side its is solid enough. The interest to keep something very flexible is less fatigue and future tear around the superposed parts of the repair.
