Postby ShaveTheWhales » Wed May 30, 2018 10:22 am

Can anyone with real experience please tell what the top end is like - around 40 knots..
I have the 9m Xr5 which I can hold down overpowered till about 35 comfortably.

I'm looking for a small storm kite..

Hi @Shave.

Wish I could give more comprehensive feedback. I’m on 12-9-6 and have only had the 6 out twice in the last six months since buying it. I blame circumstance and the top end abilities of the 9m. Both times the wind was about 34kts with occasional gusts just below 40. Lots of chop to deal with so it was limited (with my experience anyways) what I could get out of the 6 in those conditions. Characteristics were really no different from the 9m, which I consider the optimal XR size. There are plenty of other kites that do great at the top end but I've never felt more chilled out in heavy conditions than on the XR. Takes the gusts, remains stabile throughout regular cruising and on landings. I’m not a daredevil type or anything like that and if I’m honest, I don’t know if my 6m will see that much time on the water given how well the 9m does. I guess it depends on what you’re looking to do in storm conditions but it’s pretty safe to say the 6 and 5s live in that 40kts territory. Perhaps someone else can chime in with more details from their experience..

No personal experience of the XR5 but if the 9m is good to 35 knots for you I'd expect the 7m to fine at 40 knots.. not sure there is much need for smaller unless you are surfing or going out in 50 knots plus.

yep.. I can ride 7m XR4 at around 40kts just fine. it starts to get iffy after that.. but it does not happen often where I live..
I only had one session where I felt I needed a smaller kite so far...

Had 5m Boost2 in 40knots with up to 50 gusts.
Great kite and perfect for such conditions!

I'd recommend checking out the 7m XR5, before deciding that the 6m is the one for you should you opt to go with Core. A friend has the 7m and it is a massive jump down from the 9m XR5 and when compared with a 7m Ozone Edge V9, both inflated, it sat inside it....! I can say from experience that the 11m XR5 is quite a handful in 40kt winds.... it wasn't pretty but I managed to get back to the beach after it had increased from 25/28kts.

Sorry, just want to make sure that’s not a typo. You had the 11 out in 40kts? Friend of mine is pro and rides 9 in +35kts when the rest of us mortals are on 7s and 6s. Someone sporting an 11 at nearly double the indicated wind range sounds a bit outrageous. Not making accusations but would appreciate if you could elaborate..

I'm not sure about him, but I've been on a Flite 17 in 22-26 knots on 3 different occasions. I didn't do it intentionally nor did I enjoy it, but I was able to ride it back in every time. I'm 230 pies and was riding a Mako 150. I rode a Prodigy 8m in 35-43 knots last year in the OBX, fully powered up. Maybe if this guy's as heavy as I am, was riding a small board, and was riding SUPER slow straight upwind, keeping the kite right on the water...maybe?

Just to be clear in Wind Power....il 10knts is 1..20knts are (not 2 but) 4...

17 m kite in 20 22kt its less than half of Power than a 11m in 40knt ..u can use a calculator to know exactly ..
If u go in real 40knts .i mean not Just a single gust from the 30...maybe better use a small kite 5 6
