Trouble finding board after crash

Postby resqman911 » Sun Jul 15, 2018 3:40 am

Hey guys , another newbie question.

So yesterday on two different occations on very minor crashes I had a tough time finding my board, in choppy water its tough to find a board thats upside down , luckily both times I was fairly close to shore so I body dragged in to shore, spotted the board and then body dragged back out, but if this happen away from shore I’m worried I will lose my brand new board, any suggestions or hints for a newbie?

For a tt, get orange fins and paint the handle orange so you can see it either way.
Or get a go-jo.

^^ I'm with him ^^

A Go Joe is a very safe way of keeping an eye on your board. Only real safe solution out there really. Mind you, you usually will find your board.

I can bodydrag fine, it's just so difficult to find TT in waves. After loosing board and looking for it for hours next day I got Go-Joe. All problems are gone. Only thing to remember- inflate it before session. Also possible to make home made solution, Probably could work fine as well with inflatable rings.

Best advise I ever had was to body drag immediately, going in the same direction you crash. Count to 10, reverse, count to 10 again and you will be back by your board. Focus on good body drag technique, if you can not feel the water flowing from head to toe, you may be trying to go upwind at too high of an angle, which will drag you downwind. Don't waste time drifting downwind looking for your board. That just creates more distance and tacks trying to get back to your board and a greater chance of losing it. Of course practice in lighter wind and waves until you have some confidence. An upside down board drifts downwind a lot slower due to the drag of the straps in the water so its important not to lose any more ground than necessary. The Go-Jo does work well but after some time you will want to lose it.

I've got a cf rpt pro that is totally black. Never been a problem finding it. I just body drag a couple times and there it is ! I guess if I was concerned I would think of a solution, some bright colored fins or staps would help.

especially for black carbon boards spray as much as possible bright red. I typically do fins and add some red ducked tape for the top. Never a problem.
