I know there’s a lot of info about kiting in Varadero on the forum, but there seems to be some inconsistencies, which is why I elected to make a new post. Specifically some posters were saying kiteboarding is not allowed in the hotel zone, but when I contacted the Royalton Hicacos and Amelia Los Americas, they said that kiteboarding was permitted, but the Royalton said you had to be in the ‘free zone’. I assume this means I need to find an uncrowded spot on the beach where I would have room to launch and land.
I’m just wondering if anyone can share recent experience kiteboarding in Varadero and whether I need to be concerned about any restrictions. I would hate to book my vacation (for next March) only to find that kiteboarding is prohibited.
Also, for now the Royalton is the front runner because the price is better. However, if the Amelia Los Americas offers some advantage as a kiteboarding location (or vice versa), I would like to know this. I prefer to ride waves if possible, as long as they aren’t too big.
PS: I’m not looking at the Cayos because my wife and I also want to make a day trip to Havana.

Hey, yea had no problem setting up on the resorts beach. I asked beforehand and had no objections, just found an area clear from people and did my thing. Couple other kiteboarders came out later in the week. Lots of those Portuguese Man-O-Wars out there! Was jumping over them.. think I sliced one with the foil. All in all its was a good time.

Thanks for the info. Good to know for future planning. Didn’t know about those Man O Wars.

Sure, I went down early Feb. Winds were N/E first couple days, 10-12knots, then 20-25 knots for the remainder on the week but Easterly. Which was side shore to very slightly side off. Stayed at the Paradisius Veradero and if you google it on maps it has an rocky "out crop" which makes for a gusty launch. Cannot launch off the "out crop" as it's really sketchy plus not maintained by resort staff and had lots of man o wars washed up on the rocky "beach". Not reccomended. I think kiting in Veradero would be better at the end of the peninsula for more flexibility with wind direction. Any questions, fire away.
