OBX nasty water warning

Postby Kitegeez » Sun Oct 14, 2018 4:11 pm

I had a nice session Sat. 10/6 in the sound/OBX Sunday morning I'm at Acute Care Nags Head with very painful and totally swollen lower leg. I've been to the emergency room at home for half a day and admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics going on 3 days now.

I've only slightly improved. This is definetly a seawater bacterial infection. I've got more hospital days to come.
Be careful out there and make sure you can cover the medical bills if you're unlucky and catch something nasty.

Thanks for the public service warning.
Scary situation.
Hope you’re better soon!

Also for public benefit, if you’re willing:

Where were you riding?

What’s the organism? Vibrio? Others? Multiple?

Did you cut yourself in the water?

Did you have a previous injury/open wound/sore?

What’s your age?

Do you have any relevant medical conditions (circulatory, immune, infectious, cardiac, diabetes, kidney, cancer, liver, nerve etc)?

Sorry if the questions are too personal, but any answers you are willing to share could be helpful.

Just keep on eating chicken :thumb:
MASSIVE antibiotics feeding for mass production, killing humans sooner or later by multi-resistant bacteria.

Good luck to the poor guy in hospital!

I'm guessing that a cut or open wound is the culprit.

The Neuse River Basin empties into the Pamlico Sound. There is always a lot of contamination coming out of the Neuse River Basin, but it's been compounded recently by Hurricanes Florence and Michael and related high levels of rainfall run-off in NC.

There are many cases of Vibrio vulnificus contracted through open wounds in the Pamlico Sound. It's advisable to wear foot protection in areas with shellfish and rocks (esp. Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo), and don't kite soundside with an open, unprotected wound.

I hope the OP gets well quickly. :thumb:

You have to treat any cut or abrasion at OBX sound with antibiotics. We've had a couple guys end up at Nags Head clinic with infections over the years. Nothing new.

Have the same problem at Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs. A couple of friends got nasty infections from cuts. The bacterial count goes up with the rainfall runoff. I usually consult the Florida Healthy Beaches website but it only tracks enterococcus and every 2 weeks, more often if the count is high. They have had to close some beaches to swimming in the area in the past.

Yesterday the beach where I kite had warnings to swimming due to the red tide. I and several others kited anyway. No odor and no dead fish seen. I have ridden in red tide conditions in the past when it was worse. I have had no ill effects.

It isnt so much like a coliform bacteria, it is found in salt water environments, and not so much contaminated water.

If you endure any kind of wound in salt water that becomes seemingly infected and or you run a fever run do not walk to your ER.

vibrio vulnificus is a bug that is associated with salt water wounds. It is easy to treat with antibiotics early on, but if you think you can just walk it off, and goes systemic, Can Kill you.
