two board quiver

Postby keegster17 » Tue Nov 13, 2018 4:32 pm

I am trying to keep my board quiver to two. I just sold my Mako, Ocean Rodeo, 140cm, i liked it but I found in lighter wind, I was having a difficult time going up wind; great for chop. I still have my RRD Bliss V5 139x43, another great board, but I find as well in lower wind, I struggle to stay on top of the water, and I am forced to pump the kite. I own a 12m LEI and 18m Flysurfer Soul and 9m LEi. I also own the NP Foilboard/twin tip CRX 145cm x 45, not a bad twin tip board but not great. I don't really want to give up the RRD, any thoughts on another board to help me out, which might mean three boards!

Sounds like you already know the answer: 3 boards, 1 kite. Rig for the surfboard mid range. If wind increases, grab your twintip and go do some jumps. If wind drops, go rip around on your foil. Having all 3 on beach allows for quick changes.

If you're travelling light, you can drop 1 board by having foil hybrid using either the surfboard or the twintip like you have.

Should have kept that mako IMHO. ;-)

I fully agree with your last sentence...

Do not agree with the 1 kite 3 board TT/SB/HF solution.
Some spots will be equally suitable for all 3 if the kiteboarder has a high level of boardcontrol.
In reality I find myself selecting spots based on which board I ride. If wind drops, but has been 35 kts hours before the Dutch North sea coast is very choppy hence difficult (for me impossible) to ride on HF. Inland spots and SB do not make much sense as well. If just to little wind for lets say your 9m and TT the SB will not be much fun in the Ijsselmeer chop..

Might vary depending on local conditions. Around here (Vancouver Island, Canada), wind will often vary 10-15kts within a 2-3 hours session window, either rising or falling depending on the day, often fairly quickly. If I am out there perfectly powered on my 10m and surfboard, then wind drops by 10kts, I may squeak in another 30-45 minutes before it dies by a quick switch to foil ... versus missing it by the time I land and re-rig a 12m.

As for being too choppy to ride your HF.....that's the exact opposite of my experience, the chop makes the HF the most fun option, as it cuts right through it, no knee jarring surface slapping. Plus if it was blowing 35kts and declining, that should ideally leave nice residual wind swells to play in. High wind ugly sea state conditions has been a great surprise for the foil, in finding they are not just for light wind butter conditions!

I stand by my 3 board solution. :thumb:

I’m 200lbs. I ride 137x42cm as my regular twintip and 170x50cm Flysurfer Door as LW board. Let’s leave the foiling aside (since I still have a regular and a LW foils).
If there foils haven’t been invented I’d get Flysurfer Radical 144x46cm as a third board to cover marginal conditions.

Well, then again, I have a foil (or actually 2-3 foils depending how you count) so I haven’t assembled my door for over 12 months and I’m not buying 144x46 either. Both of my surfboards are for sale too :)
So I end up selling my 15m Turbine and using 9m most of time with foil or twintip, try to avoid 11m as much as I can and 7m/5m kites get me into even better foiling or some good jumping winds.
The 170x50cm door is only left for less than butt deep shallows in light winds.

Thanks guys for all your comments. Does anyone have a RRD Bliss board, that can agree with me or share their experience, that it rides more like a smaller board based on the size i mentioned, 139x43cm?

A hydrofoil is 2 boards in itself, with regards to how much space it takes up. So don't think you are getting away with space savings and simplicity by making a hydrofoil your second board.

And technically, I only have the Liquid Force "Kitefish" which I ride in all conditions (3.5m to 13.5m), and a hydrofoil to go on that board when it is just a little light for me on the 13.5m.

Yes, but IMO no...

The "second" board as a derivate from the hydrofoil, is IMO a huge compromise, that will not suit most kitesurfers.

So they will want either a full on TT to jump with max power, or a full on waveboard with no compromises, instead.

That is what I see around here, and also prefer myself.

But agree, go with the "best" TT you can ever think of for windy conditions, and then a hydrofoil for the rest (and you got that now you wrote), and you dont need anything else.

Sell your 18 m2 keegster17, if you are average weight, does not make any sense with a hydrofoil.
