flysurfer soul: I need to know 3 things.

Postby edt » Mon Nov 19, 2018 1:18 am

1) how well does it avoid the usual taco wing wraps and folding that normal foil kites get in gusty conditions
2) does it turn fast enough to loop a 12 meter kite on 20 meter lines
3) any pop?

Anyway saw a guy out in cleveland riding that soul and was super impressed with how well it seemed to handle the gusts, should have borrowed it for a while but didn't want to get addicted to a new kite, but now I guess I'm ready to buy one.

You should borrow one for a demo.
I have a 10m soul on 22m lines.
It's stable in the gusts, holds it's shape well.
I loop it through gybes, turns fast enough, but it does loop with a lot of power if it's windy.
It boosts like crazy, not something I'm into with the hf at the moment.

My experience with the 12m. On 21m lines and 60cm bar.
1. Very stable, if it overflys, it just drifts back into the wind window. Some times does start to taco but it recovers quickly.
2. Down loop gibes with a foil. Have to grab steering line to get it to loop quickly. (Which gives less power in the loop too).
Loops with a twin tip, using the bar, very powerful. Not pivotal loops. Big wide powerful drawn out loops. I am use to doing kite loop back rolls on my oceanrodeo flite 14.5m very easy. Not so on my 12m soul. More practice I guess.
3. I find it has good pop, just load up your TT and pull bar. Only have to redirect kite a little bit. In 14+ knots.

Took me about 5 sessions for me to get used to it. My first foil kite. Now wouldn’t be with out it. Very versatile kite. Hydrofoiling from 7-14knts. TT from 12+ knots.

I have many videos on YouTube using the Soul 12m with hydrofoil. Just search “kitehume”

1) yes, but it is 2x thicker than the Sonic or Chrono I think, huge amount of air in it. Upwind not the same.
2) 12m quite slow to loop it, was quite light
3) sonic has a pop too ;) Soul bar pressure is higher.

Good kite. But man, new Edge on TT, priceless...

tks bruh! That's exactly what I wanted to know. I'll also demo it when I get a chance by my friend only has the 9 not the 12. I don't care too much about upwind capability that's not what I'm looking for right now in a foil kite.

The thicker profile allows it to drift better and makes it more stable. Inflate is still very quick.

For a foil kite it loops still VERY fast. Unlike the Chrono/Sonic, the Soul also loops with much more power which is great for very light wind starts. Want it to pivot like the race kites with less power? Reach up and pull a steering line and it will do so super quick. Check youtube for demonstrations of this.

The bar pressure is higher on the Soul but you gain so much including once again stability, turning speed, and relaunch that it's well worth it. Also if you are coming from an inflatable, you won't really notice it.

Completely different kite and lets not talk about Edge's problems with bad valves and durability

I have a 15m Soul and it has been a fantastic kite. I loop my kite a lot and have no problem doing so on standard lines. I really REALLY want a 12m since I think that could fulfill my traveling one kite quiver but I'm super heavy on kites right now. If you get the Soul, I recommend getting some different line lengths as well, I'm just starting to dab into that and it's been a lot of fun. My 15m on 15m lines has been really surprising.

I can't judge the looping cause I have a 15m and loops are slow, but jumping is awsome even in 8 knots, riding from 5-6 knots.

I owned other foil kites before, FS speed 4 lotus, and Ozone Chrono V2 both in 15m and FS Soul is in another league specially if we focus on kite stability, Soul doesn't do weird things even when not flown optimally and has a ton of lowend, in par with high end race kites with the sacrifice of a bit of upwind hability, although if you fail a gybe Soul don't get into the taco you're frightened of, like most high end race kites do on it's extreme lowend.

^^ I bet it recovered but yea looks like 0 wind. In that kind of wind, nothing will fly.
