Light Rider Quiver Question

Postby Kiterisland » Fri Nov 30, 2018 4:56 pm

I'm 100kg (220lbs) and have 17m, 12m, 9m quiver with two boards. My wife wants to start learning and she is 55kg (120lbs). I don't want to just assume what sizes she would need, and cant find much modern info for what sizes work for such a small lady starting out, so I thought id ask here. We are in great lakes area so mainly light 10-18kt but some nice days 25kt+ usually gusty.

Would you lighter riders out there please give me some guidance?
What sizes should i be thinking about and what range are you getting out of them?

Thanks in advance for your time.

My wife is about the same size. She has an 8m Rebel that she rides in 15-22kn on a twintip. She could go lower than 15kn, but she doesn’t like being underpowered, and she doesn’t like flying kites bigger than 8m. At 20kn+ she is absolutely lit. At 22kn+, she breaks out the 5m.

If you mention what your kites models are it would certainly help but on an 18 knots day she'd ride your 9m as her usual size and probably would want a 13m Contra/Turbine for Midwest LW summer days, and a nice door board (Flydoor 144x46cm would be awesome). For stronger winds it'll be a 7m size.

The 12m size would kinda work as her LW kite but not really, but you can get her extension 7-10m line extensions and that would help as a cheap hack.

I've seen a bodybuilder of 240 lbs or so in pretty good shape not needing a diet. Not everyone heavy is a fat boy.

There are so many variables other than size to make a kite work. That is to say a 120 lb beginner in 15 knots does not want the same 9m kite as a 220 pound confirmed rider uses for boosting in 25 knots. Think bar pressure and bar throw, easy relaunch and easy keep in the air and easy sheet and go power. My daughters 90 and 110 lbs are really enjoying Boxers and they dislike all my favorite kites. One real problem is a beginner doesn’t know what they will like so can’t possibly verbalize but may know when they fly it. If you can let her fly a lot of kites.
