One-third of the entrants (6 of 18) are from the Netherlands. That's a strong group of riders. 3 others are from UK, and 2 are from S. Africa. I never realized how many of the top KOTA riders are from Netherlands!
If it ain't Dutch it ain't much

I'm not convinced Jerrie Van De Kop, Ruben Lenten and Sam Light should be given automatic entery every year. These guys are great riders still, but they should be in a video vote category.
Great to see Posito made it into this years competition. My money is on Liam Whaley, he looked brilliant last year and should have won it.
I agree! I think they did post a video (at least Ruben did) but this was a 2008 video
don't get me wrong his style is nice and agressive and he is def the founding father of this extreme variant of Kitesurfing but I agree he should not automatically be selected and should at least make some effort for a new video.

There should be a hard quota for riders from last year so that more new riders are supported.
Why? Kiteboarding isn't that big and I do not think the competition would be fun if we watch beginners send their kites.
Not beginners. New riders that have a similar level as the ones selected now but who weren't in the last Kota.

Very disapointed. Notwithstanding the contribution and history of Ruben L and Jerry VDK, they don t diserve this time Their prestation last year was more than average. Their video was not good and the one of Lenten was even prehistoric while the rules said it should be recent. JVDK is himself the ecological caution of red bull. They did not get a lot of like on their video. It should be called the inner circle Kota. Or maybe the megaloop challenge of cape town looking at the choice more given to heavy megaloopers than stylish competitors. True also that selecting the tenth first of last year and giving too many wild cards does not open for new competitor. Very misty selection. Let s be clear it is a demo of the inner circle not a contest with fair and transparent entries. Sad for the non selected honest applicants. And by the way no women no cry whereas I think there was place for one or two either.

some of the competitors were scared of their heats last year, i am not sure if this is healthy or not! 2 near drownings is not really that cool imo, but yes they know what they are doing, but dont be overinfluenced by insta fame and sponsorship $.. that is not healthy imo... balance risk.
its an invite comp.. that is what it is, need returns on investment for selling their drink.

I’m afraid the moment you announce a freestyle competition it would become unhooko-rama in an instance.
I think it’s guys’ vlogs and videos which actually excite riders a lot - to spot a next trick which looks smooth and possible to try to work on in a season to come. Spot cool gear, figure what they might want to buy.
Need more of fest days where top riders will show off and promote the sport and gear.
And it’s. Or the same trick over and over again which makes the riding atttactive but rather transitioning from one to another and make overall impression

Why don’t they make qualifiers?
With the number of participants who send entry videos this year, it would have been great.
And it certainly would have not given the impression of a rather ... obscure selection process ...
Oh and also: don’t ask people to vote if you are planning to make your selection in spite of those votes!

Many years ago they had the “Fly to KOTA” qualifiers...few around the world.
Winner received a wildcard and airline tickets etc to join KOTA.
Very cool, but then you won’t have control over the riders...

Happy Carlos Mario is in...he has a high chance of winning.
I dunno, he looks like he only weighs about 55 kg, he might get blown off the beach!
Calos Mario Bebe is a MONSTER!
In downwinders here in Brazil he uses a 12 meters RPM no matter wind conditions, from 18 to 35 knots. Once I asked him how he could manage that, and he said that he has total control of equipment
IMO, he can reach the finals if not winning.

I definetelly agree. By far Carlos Mario is one of (if not THE) most technical and powerful competitor out there. I've seen his performances in the WKC finals, he is in another level. However he doesn't have too much experience in that kind of conditions... but if he manage the psychological aspect of going huge, I believe that he has a big chance of wining and that would be incredible!
