RUST anyone?

What do you all reccomend/use to remove/protect against the rust on certain parts of Kitesurfing equipment? ie.: Binding parts, spreader bar parts, etc...

You can remove the rust by putting the parts in coca cola for a while.

Don't know how to protect it against further rusting, but i don't think it should happen with watersport equipment in the first place.

clean the parts with a s.o.s. pad, then paint them. if they are painted then they wont rust. depending on what the function of the part is, the paint may where off after a while.

Not having problems with "major" parts,
but just a few of the screws, and some other small things...

Yeah, coke, pepsi, etc. These are all highly acidic and will eat the rust away. You can also save your flat pop bottles (2liters) and when you need to clean your toilet, dump the old flat pop in there and leave it for a couple hours (or the next time you gotta go) and viola...squeaky clean porcelain! LOL

Painting seems to just create a mess, if you ask me.

For cleaning your gear, dipping in coke may be hard to do depending if its a fixed loop, or something.

coke to clean (car battery too) and small bit of WD40 to prevent.

fresh water rinse, then WD-40 (its not too greasy compared to others).

Coke takes away the rust, but I wonder if it is more damaging than rust because of the acid? Any chemists out there? Rust is a by product of corrosion is occuring, but other types of corrosion can occur without leaving rust. Many times aluminum will fail with no tell tale signs of corrosion - but upon close inspection you will see pitting at the failure point.
