well, i'd check & ask a sailshop.
the fabrik that's used for kites is (well, i only know the german word: spinnaker-nylon)

so try them out and ask how they print on there.

The Ultranectar crew has been using spray paint with their logo stencil on their Wipis. A bit rough from close but looks fine from the sky.
You can also use adhessive sail repair tape in different colors to create patterns.
I don't know if the weight distribution would be an issue.

Or, find a humungous plotter and stuff yer kite in it.
That way you can serigraph the wife, yer kids, the dog, or your favourite playmate on yer kite

.... My favourite playmates ARE my kites...

Since I'm not sponsored I'd be more keen on putting pictures of skulls or a big dragon on it or somethings like that...

there needs to be a way of decorating a kite that doesn't damage performance...

As far as I Know if you prepared to pay, Kite companies like Cabrinha will do it for you. They did it over here for HB icecream with a ton of Cabrinha kites, without a hint of a Cabrinha logo on them. But they had big money to spend.. Maybe an Idea If Your Rich and already have something deisgned to go on your kite

Lots of them: Silkprinted. (look at the Slingshot and others brands logos)

Airbrushed for an artistic look.

You can try heat transfers (laser copiers)

You have to choose the right pain for durability and UV resistance.
