PS I hope you don't mind but I have started selling Fokittens bitches dirty underpants. INquireries will be discretely handled. Can I say that here?

None of the ram brigade had the courage to back up their words/personal abuse with $. What a shame.

As previously stated, pros choose kites based on stability, reliability, upwind performance, jumping ability, and hangtime. LEIs also happen to be easier to setup, better in water launches, more stable in rotors, and safer in wind dropouts or gear failure, but this is not why pros choose them.

Your average weekend kiter also needs to optimise these facets. That is why, hands down, LEIs are superior to ram airs in EVERY respect.

I have a good use for foil kites.Cut them up ito squares 40 by 40cm... and there you have it..a lifelong supply of hankerchiefs to blow your runny nose on.The perfect place for a foil really.

I'm the anon who asked for bets on rams getting into the top 20 PKRA this year (still no replies or takeups on the bet, by the way!). I'm not the guy who posted above.

Just wanted to say: Chris Calthorp isn't in the top 96. Aside from that, he's flying inflatables, not rams.

before the annono bashing turns its ugly face towards chris calthrop there a few things you should know about this guy.

He was the FIRST to kitesurf jaws

<img src = "http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepage ... ejawss.JPG">

When he put his picklefork through his face is whilst setting the first (and only) world kitesurf speed record of over 33Knots see description below. If you want to see the video of this epic wipeout see

http://www.k48.com/speedweek.htm

Both these achievements (using foils I might add) far outrank any of the twisty twirly crap that the contest circuit uses as judging criteria.

In addition to this the first crossing of the english channel was performed using flexifoil ram airs so until an LEI rider beats this speed record or goes out riding huge jaws I suggest the annono brigade just accept that foils and LEI's are different and each have particular strengths and weaknesses, there is no BEST.

Extract from http://www.k48.com

"It was a squally day with very gusty winds of up to 45 knots. I was using a 4m Blade after trying a massively overpowered 6.4 and then 4.9. I was still maxed as you can see from the video clip below. My girlfriend caught this clip (below) on my old camera. (Hence the poor quality). I had already set a kitesurfing record of 33.38 knots earlier on a warm up run. (I started slow off the line and finished bouncing on my ass because I needed to stop for a windsurfer on the finish line. That was an easy 33.38 knots. I figured 40 knots was in reach and decided to go all out. But over 35 knots I couldn't hold my rail anymore and was just accelerating out of control. I drifted out of my planned line and started losing vision from the way I was rattling over the water. I was on the edge of control and was just hoping to cross the finish line. Then through the blurred vision I just spotted a recreational windsurfer 40ft straight ahead, just sitting in the water. I let go of the kite or I would have ploughed into him. I fell face forward and expected to tumble but of course just bounced. Then my face penetrated the water and stopped. This let my board catch up with my face. The sharp tip of the speed board struck me across the cheek bone 1 cm below my right eye. It destroyed my right cheek bone and right eye socket (with the transferred shock) and it finished by smashing my nose into bits as it bounced away from my face. Luckily my eye was not too damaged but it was in a new position! I had double vision an loads of pain... I got back to the beach somehow and was off in an ambulance to find out the worst

Chris Calthorp's face injury was a tragedy - I take my hat off to him for giving it a go. He is a great rider and a good guy.

Nevertheless, Chris's riding (prior to him going to inflats) reflected the inadequacies of ram airs. Heck, if you can't match it with the inflats in terms of jumping, hangtime, stability, control, etc, let's do something radically different like setting a speed record or crossing the English Channel.

Kiting Jaws was impressive, but his website claiming it was "A world first - probably the most significant event in the new sport of kitesurfing" might have been a bit over the top. Maybe it reflects the hyperbole mindset of the ram air brigade. Anyway, because LEIs turn faster, they are much safer on waves than rams.

Chris's wipeout in setting the kite speed record might have been avoided if he used an inflatable to do it. Losing his edge precipitated the wipeout. Because LEIs fly closer to the edge of the window, it would have been easier for him to hold his edge on an inflat. In a roundabout way, the ram air might have been responsible for his facial fractures.

What a piece of crap !!!
Sorry, I don't usually speak like that, but above assumption is so utterly wrong.

For speed records, foils are the only way to go.
The only thing that could have saved him, would be that a LEI would go much slower (no record)

I prefer LEI over ARC's and Foils myself because of many reasons (Better performing in other respects, and can not collapse) - but foils are the best performing, and fastest, and safest kites, when talking speed, no doubt about it !

The further forward a kite sits in the window - the faster you can go, without losing your edge.
It's as simple as that.
