I took the listings from the Pro kite tours in 2002, and made a graphical illustration of how the brands were distributed among all competitors (regardless of rankings).

It is just facts from the year gone past, and don't use it as anything else as statistics.

It seems evident that the KPWT has a majority of European contestants - which is reflected in Takoon being the top brand here, with Naish a close runner up.

In the PKRA, Cabrinha is very big - almost on level with Naish and Wipika which is on top.

Some brands are very new, so they only have few riders of course.

I know many of you are keen on this subject (for some odd reason...) - so I will just let the info out for you to see, instead of counting yourself.

The registered brands are those who has written what brand they are using.

But please don't use it as anything else than statistics (don't misuse it that is), thank you !

The brands are distributed quite evenly all over the rankings - so there should be no reason to make a "succesrate/brand" display.

This would be to misuse the facts - as you can not make statistics on such a small group (top ten f.ex).

This is the reason why I don't do this - it would be wrong.
And also - the brands are really distributed nice evenly along the rankings, so there is no need to !

Good post Peter - must have taken a fair bit of work.

Is it possible to create similar graphs, but as well as NUMBER of kites in use, would it be possible to give weight to the success/ranking of different brands?

eg Mark Shinn uses Naish, he's ranked number 1, so his choice of kite gets eg 100 points, Robby Naish uses Naish but is ranked 30, so Naish only gets 70 points etc etc.

Better still, give them points on an exponential system. eg Shin's kites get 100 squared points, Robby Naish's kites get 70 squared points, the guy at 100 gets 1 squared points. This would seem to give a fairer weighting to the top 10 and less weighting to the riders coming in lower.

Why ? This would be stupid, as everyone knows (at least they should know...) that the kites used today does not make a difference for the competitor results - it is ONLY the rider !

These kites (LEI's) are all performing equal today, with small style differences only, and there is no doubt that Mark Shinn would have won regardless of which kite he used

So it is merely a way to get an idea of which brands are used - NOT which performs the best.

This is what I wanted to warn you about !

If you do it the other way, it is a typical misuse of statistics, either because of boredom, or non-knowledge, or to serve one or several brands specific marketing purpose.

I really don't know which is the worst of these 3...

Maybe I should'nt have posted these graphics at all - I was a bit worried in fact.

Take it lightly, and only as an (maybe) interesting fact for 2002
