I am kind of confused on why people say you need 10 mph winds to kitesurf on a 10m projected kite...Here in sarasota, weather.com always says the winds are going to be 9-12 mph but ALWAYS end up being 2-3...I go out and fly my kite anyways...hard to launch but I can still get up on my 161 board. As a matter of fact, I am blessed when I go out and the winds are at a constant 8 mph...woa that would be nice...I can't imagine going out when the winds are at 13 mph...that would be nuts. And yet I hear people saying that 10m should be flown in 20 knots....Can someone please tell me why that is?

Well I don't fly MY 10m projected kite in 20 knots... far too overpowered. I'd fly a 10m FLAT tube in 20 knots but not projected.
8 knots is fine with my 6ft directional board.. plenty of power from my 20m AERO (roughly 10 true projected).

I think that wind is for using a wakeboard that's around 140cm long and of low volume and thin edges.
If you have a bigger board you can go out in less wind but I need 10 knots to wakeboard using my 20m AERO .. however in 8 knots i'm goin upwind using a 6ft directional board and the same kite....

Also depends on your weight too. I'm standard weight so it's pretty easy for me.
"standard weight" is 75kg by the way.
If 150kg you need a kite twice the size.... if 37kg you can get by with a kite half that size for the same wind and board.

Good point, but i think the 15-30 knots range is much safer for a begginer or intermidiate rider. Winds above 30 knots are usually very gusty and unpredictable, and needs a lot of experience to ride.

Out in some real stuff today... 20 - 25 knots... didn't drop below 20.... gusts closer to 30... using 12m X2 and one of aklbob's homemade plyboards.
Didn't need a big board today... smaller the better.
I'm interested in seeing how 30+ goes.... forecast 30+ knots 2 morrow but don't have a small enough kite.... but today wasn't that gusty at all...

I am with you Dux,
The forcast patern is so far off also in Miami on Noaa and iwindsurf.com for coastal marine forcast and predictions so most of the time we don't get shit.
I feel the same I am lucky if I get a ride in 8 to 10 mph with my 18.1 F-One kite.

weather.com sucks, here in argentina is also innacurate.
I read the forecast made by "servicio meteorologico nacional" it depends of the goverment,
my point is, arent there other forcast servicies there? probably one of these is far more accurate that weather.com
