Woody
Plan to make flip tips on 122cm board:
Bottom will be 117cm
This gives me 2.5cm at each side
Tried yesterday:
1)Saw through first layer of plywood at bottom side just in front of the release edge.
2) Bend it up (yes it makes a cracking sound) in 40 to 45degrees
3) Glass epoxy on deck part of 5cm wide: 3 layers
4) Epoxy + filler on bottomside where release edge sists and where I sew through the first layer.

This will give me additional flip tips of 2 - 2.5cm high
Not much but just incase it will help to get over the wave and not into the wave.

Layers:
1)Bottom sheet 37cm x 117cm
2)One O ring sheet 37cm x 117cm - 3.5cm wide at sides and 7cm at tips for fixing the fins
This sheet increases the release edge height to almost 8mm
3)85cm long 3.5cm wide strip at each side for building height at sides
4)Deck 36cm x 122cm
5)Between deck and bottom preshaped 20mm insulation foam to give deck round shape.

Glue with one component PU glue

Lots of sanding afterwards for getting nice sides.

Eddy - do you have the trade name for the insulation foam ? I cannot locate it in the UK yet.

Floormate from Dow Chemical is blue
The foam (can't recall the brandname) from BASF is green.
Available in building DIY shops.

What is the thickness of your plywood board?
Thanks,

Bottom: 3.6mm
O-ring layer: 3.6mm
Additional side strip: 3.6mm
Deck: 3.6mm
With the glue it will be about 15mm at the sides
In the middle I put in foam which I shape out of a sheet of 20mm
Probably leave 18mm over
3.6mm (bottom) + 18mm + 3.6mm (deck) = 25.5mm
Or about 1 inch

Partially cutting through wood is commonly done (eg guitar construction). It is called "kerfing". You are right, it can work well for making your flip tips. You can experiment with the number of cuts, cut depth and which side of the board you make the cuts on. It all depends on thickness and bend radius that you want to achieve.
