longboarding in lite wind

Postby tweekster » Fri Mar 14, 2003 8:56 am

we haven't had wind here for some time now, and for one reason or another i haven't been able to kite for almost a month now! talk about jonesing! out of shear desperation i went out today in barely 8-10 mph winds with my bigggest kite, an aero 14 and a 9 ft longboard. i had a blast! its opened a whole new deal for me. in the past i'd have to wait for those whitecaps to start, now as long as i can get my kite in the air i am on the water! i feel whole again!!!!

i really recommend it to anyone in a similar windless situation. sure beats sitting on the beach wishing you had a bigger kite! :thumb:

Check out:
http://www.spleene.com
and go to Kiteboards "The Door" or "Starter"
Man, these boards go upwind with a bug's fart,
and they rock, 'cause they're only 5 ft. long!!

Take care!
Rainer

those boards look pretty cool, but do you know what size of kite they are using to get those wind ranges? just curious. besides, riding that longboard was actually really a fun and different experience! the wind is supposed to do the same thing tomorrow. you can bet i'll be longboarding again!

I got a Starter and go upwind at less than 10knots with a 12m Rhino I
I wouldn't go much earlier with a 20m Kite!

Pics from a light day. I'm the only one Kite/wind surfing that day.
240 converted custom sail board, Mastair16.
I also use a 10ft couse racing board with centerboard. In 8-10mph I can easily go upwind with a Wipi 9.0 !

Notice no whitecaps and tiny waves. Side onshore winds that day.

auto logon quit on me-

Also at 110kg, big boards and the biggest kites are essential.

When we use our Malibus in light winds - it is important to choose a kite that is not too big.

Smaller LEI kites works better in 6 knots of wind - because you can toss it around all over, and keep it flying regardless what happens.
So a 14m2 is almost too big...

And it is fun to ride on a Malibu longboard, as you can trim your position perfectly for that very wind (or no-wind) on that day, so you can glide upwind easily.

Another fun thing is to ride it backwards - it is really fun to just do these freestyle moves and turns on a longboard with a kite :P

But the freedom of being able to stand and step whereever you want on the board (no straps of course, just waxed), is really cool - and you learn a lot too.

And you can easily waterstart also without straps - just with a good waxing - but I would adwise you to test if you can, in shallow water - before going further out though.

Especially because relaunching in 5 knots on the water is impossible, unless you have bridles - then it is no problem :thumb:

I'm 200 lbs and with my 17 fuel and LFT I can stay upwind in 7 knots. I think I prefer this too a long board in that it's still manuverable. I can do back rolls in 7!
