have a look at the "Map Control" next to the banners or below the navi.
Here you can turn of the navi and/or ticker.

i agree with you. i dont like the menu on the left and i dont like the java app scrolling across the bottom. i have adjusted all of my bookmarks to point to this forum without all of that navigation silliness. toby does great jobs with forums but I think he is going a bit pverboard now.
