charming breakdown....

Postby Toby » Sun Dec 21, 2003 1:29 pm

it is nice to get a wakeup call in the morning at 8 am and someone tells you that all your datas on the server are gone..... :o

I though there was a periodical backup, so first I was relaxed....
but then I heard there was no backup....yes,I was awake latest then

Immediately I also checked the datas for kitebeaches.com, which I'm working on night and day at the moment and which takes so much time, and I thought if this is gone, I die....
Lucky me it was a seoparate database and all infos saved.....

So now I had to find out when the last backup of the forum was done, mine was from May and I had understood that someone recently made one....wrong....the only one left was from September...

So here we go again, at almost 90.000 postings and 3 month of valuable infos missing....

I always see the good (have to):
Many questions have been answered and that knowledge has been shared and many people being helped. That is positive. A dataloss of the kitebeaches would have been much worse. 700 beaches, a third already worked over, would be a big loss for everyone.

So the bad is only that the search will find less topics on recent infos, but we have it still in our minds and can help if someone asks for it.

The good is: that won't happen again in the way it happend, and next year, when kitebeaches is online with all infos, the loss would have been
very painful. Now all possibilities of backups will be done, and it will be saved on tow different locations, so it can be restored immediately and the biggest lost would be one week of information, but normally one day.

It could have been worse, so I'm quite thankful and still happy, that nothing happend to me, because I almost had an accident but luckily due to fast reaction and luck nothing happend. It is not nice if a car within parts of a second stands sideways to your direction on your lane.....

So, I will work to bring back news and important infos and clean up the announcements and other stuff.

Sorry for the inconvinience, but at least no one got hurt!

Toby

Now I know!

I knew it, but didn't know that "experts" don't know it....

Guess using the phpbb administration backup utility isn't something valuable for you anymore due to high download times Toby?

Mine takes 2 minutes on a 11 mb database, guess yours would take 2 days... ;-)

But, scripting a database dump @ the point of lowest use of the board wouldn't be that much difficult and surely a daily backup is a good thing to have.

Good luck kicking it all up again Toby!

thx Mark.

The database is huge, that causes some problems.

But for the future it will be safe.

Still have some user data problems...

You could reduce it in size by about 15% without loosing any
value (in fact increasing its usefulness) ... by removing all
of PMU's old posts ;)

Some of the lost stuff is probably sitting in the cache of thousands of members PCs -> Windows/Temporary Internet Files. I've got nothing because my machine is old and I cleared them a few days ago to free up space but the guys that have new computers should have some of the topics; the more recent stuff anyway.

no, the database stuff will not be stored in the cache, otherwise you would have a cache of several hundred MB !

But it would have been nice though

Sure, I don't download the whole DB when I read a thread topic. But every page (thread) I view gets stored on my HD in cache like any other page I download off the www. Some of the lost stuff is sitting on peoples HD's as we speak, no doubt about it. I find that interesting. The info is not neccessarily lost yet... the community of kiteforum members still have (some of) it.

It would take a big effort to get it back and reorganise it. Probably not worth the trouble. We'll get over it

BTW, Flamers Paradise has been decimated. I think I can help here Toby... we can rebuild it. :bye:

Toby,

Good to see you 'back on the air'

I can help here with online backup of your database
(Best case we can set it up so a single post would be your worst loss)

I'll talk to you about it in January (I'm also in El Yaque for new year)

Andy
