Heading to Mexico next month on Aero California. Does anyone know if they charge extra boards? If they do, other than buying a NSI golf bag is there any way around the fees?

The general consensus is that you'll likely get hit with an $80 fee each way if you fess up to what you're carrying. Apparently, if you put it in a snowboard bag and tell them it's a snowboard you're likely to do OK. If you don't want to buy the NSI bag you might consider borrowing or renting one (there's a place up here that rents them).
Good luck.

Right on!!! Last April I went to Turks and Caicos and had one board, two kites (12 and 16) and one bar all packed into a snowboard bag. I flew on a commercial flight and no body ever asked me what was in the bag. I was prepared to tell them it was a special hybrid snowboard that could also be used as a wakeboard (I mean how many people bring snowboards to the Carribean. Seems plausable to the uniformed.
Actually there are a few kiteboards that even look like snowboards. Takoon used to have one.
If you don't want to buy a special snowboard bag you could take a chance and wrap it up with a ton of bubble wrap and duct tape.
Good Luck!

I have a snowboard bag, but I didn't think that would work since I'm going to Mexico. Also, since Aero California doesn't fly to any ski destinations like United or Delta, I thought a "snowboard" would stand out even more.
Does anyone have any experience with getting boards on Aero California?

Take fins off, keep bag under 5 ft, unless you got the "golf bag", stick with the snowboard story. If heavy interrogation, use the "hybrid line".

I just wrapped 125 in bubble wrap and told them it was a water ski.
This is one of the free allowed pieces like snowboards or golfclubs on aircanada anyway.
Not really lying by calling it a water ski and more believeable when going south.
Cheers

Not me or my friends (have lent it out a few times.) It's been on over a dozen different flights with not so much as a second look from the airline peeps!
If you have a small TT (125cm or smaller) you might be able to manage a regular golf bag. A friend is using a Nike golf bag that looks pretty sweet, nice padding and all. Not sure on price...

My board is a 145 so it will just fit in the NSI bag. I followed the above link to WorldWide Adventures. They list the board fee on Aero California as $30 each way. Does anyone know if this is still correct. $60 in fees is still cheaper than buying a golf board bag for $145 plus shipping.
