Hi all

my new board is 110 cm and 36 wide about 13 mm thick, its made of airex foam (one layer) Bottom is made of polyrey(hpl) and carbon, and the top is carbon with polyerthane varnish. Rails are made of polycarbonate. I have mounted new TFC fins and The brilliant bindings of Ocean rodeo. I dont have to glue them ,pads and strap comes in one piece, very nice for board builders that making lots of boards. my problem is how to change the flex with out increase the weight of the board, any suggestions? sorry I dont know how to post pics, someone??

I assume you want to increase stiffness because you say you dont want to increase weight.

Three things that have an effect on stiffness that I know of:

1)a single sheet of of say 10mm will have more flex than two sheets of 5mm laminated together. Not much, but some difference
2)Concave reduces flex
3)different foam types have different flex characteristics - I dont know which is best though. I 'think' corecell has the best characteristics one board I made in the past.

My current boards are 2 ¼" sheets of divinycell laminated under 2 layers of 8oz s-glass. The boards are SUPER light, and have little flex, just a nice amount.

I'm sure there are other things that affect flex too, I'm not an expert.

THICKNESS

using the same construction - or for most any construction;

make the section that you want stiffer - thicker
make the section that you want more flexi - thinner.

I'd deffinitely stay with arex - it's the best foam you can get.

for reducing flex, I'd go for stringers. Doesn't have to bee like a paddle board stringer, you can for example add carbon. A nother opportunity is to make the bottom concave - that gives a lot of stifness as well

thanks all. I have just found a thicker and more dense foam of herex(70,55,15), think I`l try it and adjust the flex with carbon stringers.

To post pictures, first you have to upload them on your personal webspace usng an ftp server, and then either post the link to your pic or use the "img" button, type your image url, again hit the "img" button, and your image will be posted directly in the forum.

For the gallery section of this forum i don't know how it works, never tried yet.

I made a model on a cardboard and cut it out with a sharp knife. Sanded down the board and put on contact paper( or u can use masking tape). Then I put the cardboard model on the board and spray painted it. Then I used the knife again and cut out the masking with caution so dont damage the carbon layer. paint it on the board and use polyerthane varnish as a top coat.
