I have bought some small sheets of formica, but cant find anything to bond the formica to wood with? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

have you tried epoxy resin - that is one of the best glue

Gorrilla glue-
home improvment store
contact cement- used in construction for countertops
just use kraft paper in between for alignment and pull out
it bonds instantly

epoxy resin is the way to go, contact cement will yield to water ingress.
