How the pro's do inserts...

Postby Wetstuff » Sun Oct 31, 2004 2:10 am

I have loved an Underground Wave Tray for two seasons, but since I broke the nose off it in some shallows, I thought; "Hey?! How do they do things?" Smart fellows.. Here's their inserts.

And one of the smartest things is the use of HeliCoils for threads rather than other types of inserts. I've found about five kinds of 1/4-20 inserts ranging up to $1.40USD some SS, but the HeliCoil is quite reasonable.. and in the two years I've flogged this board - no signs of weakness.

Jim

......while I'm doing an autopsy - anything else to be seen?

Thanks for doing an autopsy on your deceased board. I really like the Helicoil idea. Looks like they might be making a laminated sheet of epoxy and glass and doing a bunch of inserts at once, then they just cut out what they need,,,,hmmm. The question I have is what is at the bottom to prevent the screw from pushing the glass out the other side of the board. I would almost bet that they add a thin layer of sheet metal in the lamination. If you can, grind baby grind. Thanks!
