advice needed on layup

Postby sportbilly » Fri Dec 03, 2004 7:53 pm

Right: I have a big plate of corecell 0.64 cm, a big piece of kevlar, a piece of 220gr/m2 glass and a piece of 80 gr/m2.
Plans are a 130 X 37 cm board, concave, a good flex for a soft ride.
I was thinking of a layup of

220 glass
kevlar
corecell 1.9 cm
kevlar
220glass
80 glass
I know it will work but I'm afraid it might be quite stiff. Any advice?
Cheers

without knowing the weight of the kevlar i'd say...
(or even, if i did)

use only 2 layers of corecell (1.2 cm)
use rocker table to form concave ( less than one cm)
2 layeys of 220 glass - top and bottom
1 small patch under your feet.
forget the kevlar ( unless you have a specific need for it)

imo,
-bill

I'm trying this.

probably 160gr glass
160gr Kevlar
80gr glass
corecell with pvc-edges
80gr glass
160gr kevlar

Super solid, a good flex, but: its super-shit to cut the kevlar.
30min to cut 130cm of kevlar.

and very solid.

You need to buy proper kevlar scissors to cut kevlar quickly.
You can buy them where you bought the cloth..

hey guest. that sure looks like a solid lay-up. you must have a thin core. Kevlar and 160 gr sounds a bit heavier than necesarry though.
Good luck :thumb:

Well,
Indeed I think it might be quite strong...
Core is 2x 6mm corecell, tips 1x.

I'm a bit concerned about the flex that will remain after all layers...
I need a light layer above the corecell to protect color and/or design
and I did want a layer underneath the kevlar for bonding with the corecell.

Internally I added 2 carbon-stringers for rebound.

Any suggestion on where to reduce weight?

Btw, such scissors are far to costly for the number of boards I build.
(Tried cutting them with a stanley-knife, but its very hard to do... )

get the scissors, cutting kevlar with a stanley knife will pull the warp and weft all to shit in your cloth.

I just used normal (quite sharp) scissors...
It did take me a while, but I managed to do it cleanly.

Dear guest. I would not recommend carbon stringers. Carbon has way more less flex than the other materials your using. This might actually cause a breaking line.
Good luck
