This ABS rail stuff - what's the deal with it and how do I get hold of some in the UK? Just about to move onto my second woody and the thing with my first board was that the rails were pretty damn thick so was looking for alternatives. Keep hearing about ABS but don't know a thing about it apart from chemical structure from wikipedia and hearing it mentioned here and there on forums such as this.

What i do is:

make a template of the board outline in 3-4mm mdf or other hardboard. Make it real nice and right.

Use it to draw the outline on your blank that is even thickness and oversized.

use an electric router to mill in a approx 10 mm wide ( as wide as the tool bit) and as deep u want the edge to be thick. Just use your eye and mill about 2mm outside the outline line u drew.

On a very flat and even table (use a level to check) pour epoxy into the milled grove. Be careful to get the right amount so it is even with the blank surface. i usually do it in two steps , letting the first harden. If the table is not flat the epoxy will flow down hill...

now you can mill or sand any excess to make it flat with blank. If u were carefull before it is minimal work.

Cut off most of the excess blank that is outside the milled groove that is now filled with epoxy.

Tape the template down with carpet tape and use the router and a follower bit ( the kind with a roller bearing on the end) and mill the blank out to the correct outline. U are taking off about 2mm epoxy edge and making it perfect.

Turn blank over and mill-sand-shape the deck side down to the epoxy edge. This gives u down to a 2mm thick edge if u please.

Laminate as usual.
