Ideally you should cut them out of one piece.

You can make it out of more than one piece, but the joint between them must be precise
and tight or you will have a weak spot.

You don't need the rails to be very wide to be effective.

About 1/2 an inch is enough.

What thickness do you guys use, I can buy a 4x8' sheet here in town, but I don't know whether to buy 1/4", 3/16", 1/8" or something different?
