Balsa core

Postby vol » Wed Jul 01, 2009 5:51 pm

Hi guys,
I have balsa wood 100*100*1000mm, I want to cut this balsa to small sticks 10*20mm and glue, it's possible to make strong core from this dimension or I have to find out full board length wood?
many thanks

Nice looking blank aeberl.
Would look great with clear glass over it.
What're the stringers?
Walnut? WRC? just curious.....

Balsa density varies from 150-320 kg/m3. It depends where this blank was originally located in the log.

The blank itself are two layers of 6mm balsa boards glued together. Top layer has hardwood stringers in order to take up some of the compressive loads under bending.

Hey, that´s a pretty smart way to scarf the shorter planks you can get. Just a diagonal scarf offset on the latitude and longitude layers. Should distribute the loads well.

Last winter i built a abachi veneer board from 5 layers of 1,5mm thick x 100mm "planks". a bit fiddley o put together, but in the long run was not much more work than a foam blank- it has 2 layers 155g glass on each side- stiff but not too much. concave adds a lot of structure...

Thanks for answer Guys,
Just another reason, balsa is very light wood but maybe not to strong enough? what kind of light wood is best for core? paulownia (I can't find in Europe)? or another wood? I'd like to make light and durability board.
