why are people making wood core boards by laminating strips of wood together and then glassing instead of using one piece of 4mm ply, ceder, baltic birch, etc. and then doing their glass lay up?

I am no expert, but I would think that laminated wood can be much stronger and you can control flex patterns. ???? Nico

The reason that people use laminated wood instead of soild wood is that cutting the wood up into pieces and gluing it back together splits up any weak areas in the wood, makes them smaller and and spreads them around - therby making the laminated wood stronger and more uniform
Using plywood is okay but the transverse layers that make up 1/2 the plywood laminate are not really doing any work to resist the bending forces that happen in a kiteboard .
The laminated strips have all the wood fibers running from tip to tail, which works better.

Quick answer is that plywood is cheap, easy and readily available.
Glueing up strips is much stronger and offers better flex, but is much more work and requires a lot of sanding or routing to get the finished profile.
