Light wind freestyle board

Postby Larse » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:20 am

Ok, I want a lightwind board for freestyle. I'm tired of big lightwind boards, that does nothind then just ride in low wind. I think they are build for heavier riders abd I hate riding them. So I want to build my own cool and smaller lightwind board.

I want a board that I can use, when I struggle keeping up wind with my freestyle board. I'm 75kg

Here is what I'm thinking

Size: 142x43 enough surface and still small enough to pop

Outline: pretty square. The tips should be 5cm narrower. And I was curious if it would give some low end to make the rail s-shaped, so the board would 1cm narrower in the middle

Rocker: 1cm starting by the pads. This will give a flat board that start early, I think.

Concave: small double concave on 0,5cm

Flex: stiff in the middle and a little flex starting after the pads

How would this work?

what board are you riding normally?
For what windrange you want to use this lightwindboard? With what kite?

My first thoughts: you want a freestyle board for lightwind, but from looking at the specs of it you are planning to build something that is really lightwind oriented. Maybe overkill on that part.

You mean 1cm rocker in the board? yeah will give you plenty low end, but does it still ride good for freestyle? i think not.

I think you can build a board, that works well for lightwind freestyle, and that doesnt need to be so flat. Think i build something before, worked well for me.

ok, Lets hear you first

I can tell you, what I don't want. I have a big 154x48 light wind board. I can pop it a bit (do some gayleys), but not enough. I take some really hard landings, when I do small kiteloop transitions and other small jumps event though I only get 1 meter up.. I can't do any . Basically I can't have fun. I can ride though. It's like getting 5 pop corns and some one is holding the entire bag in front of you. I want the bag, I want the fun :) We get a lot of low wind days during the summer. And that is, what this is board is for. I love those summer breezes, where it's warm and you can bring the kids to the beach etc.

I'm normally riding a 138 Liquid Force DLX 2011 with bindings and the ktise are LF Hifi. With the Hifi 13 I can ride in pretty low winds with my big Aboard 154x48 light wind board. But I hate that board. I hate the spleene session as well. They are too big and not very fun.

This is what I don't want
1. Don't want a board, that feels big
2. Don't want too hard landings, when I do small kite loops and other fun stuff
3. Don't want a board that's hard to carve
4. Don't want a board that can't pop

This is what I want in a light wind board
1. A board that feels small - 142x43, maybe only 140 in length.
2. A board than can carve well - Just more fun to ride :)
3. A fast board that shoots up wind - For early startup in low wind
4. A board with good pop - I want to do railey 2 blind in light wind
5. A board with semi soft landings (this is why I'm talking about double concave. But it should maybe only be 0,25cm. I don't know the best size)
6. A board that can ride toeside (not great, but just ok)
7. Comfortably ride - this is why is should flex in the tips a bit. If the board builds up speed, you will also make a "fake" rocker, so it performs better in high speeds as well.

I know it wont start as early as my 154x48, but that fine. I want something in between being well powered on my LF DLX and my light wind oil tanker.

My dad is a retired boat builder, so he is making the board for me. What materials would be best? Wood? Foam? Carbon? fiberglass? The concave is probably going to be the hardest part. Foam might be the easiest, right?

have a close look at the Nobile NHP boards they function extremely well although they have a rocker ....but they are really great.
The 131x 40 is such a board

dlx is pretty rockered, which isnt good for efficiency. But being a 138 it should be as efficient as a normal 132ish twintip. So it should be fine for a 75kg rider to ride from 15/16kn orso, right?

Think you pretty much know what to do.
Here is 2 things i would do. Build a board to the same shape of the dlx. Just make it a little larger and wider, so you will keep most of its feel to it. Also reduce the rocker a little. Im sure you'll gain the extra lowend you are looking for.

Dont want to get too detailed, but when i built my 144 ( im tall so 144 is normal size for me) it came out with to less rocker, only 3.5/4cm. Disappointing but i still rode it. Really good lowend. In the end i got the 144 with a 6cm as planned which is my normal used board to ride from 15/16 knots. I'd build a lower rockered board again if i wanted more lowend.

Hope this helps in getting the objective right.

I think I got the objective right. I can ride my DLX in 15 knots, but it's har dgoing up wind and get enough speed to pop out of the water.

But this board should be for 12-16 knots. So starting right before mu DLX.

Would it help to make it narrower in the middle. So that the raiæ is s-shaped like the the spleene session is? I could imagine that there is less board to push through the water, which will help with the low end

Don't anyone have some comments? Especially on the outline I suggested...

I think the problem is that you want a "Light Wind Freestyle" board.

The issure being that they are different. So you can make a board that will be a big freestyle board, and blend the characteristics, but its not going to be a great freestyle board or a great lightwind board anymore.

Im not trying to discourage you at all. Definitely just give it a shot and see what you come up with. Youll find things you do and dont like and you can go from there and build another board.

Let us know what you come up with.

Larse,
The 2011 Nobile 2HD 137 could be a very good option for what you want, ie small freestyle board for light winds. This board is very efficient, ie has very little drag, and gets going easily, making it ideal for lightwinds. Excellent upwind and feels light on the feet. A very smooth ride in lightwinds.

.
I know this. It will be a compromise. But I rather loose a little low end and have more fun, than ride my current ferry in light wind. I'll keep my light wind ferry for those few days, where nothing else rides. I'll use my "freestyle" light wind board, when I struggle to go up wind on my real freestyle/wakestyle board. So it's to fill a gap between those two. Some might say it's a waist, but it's all about having the most fun and getting most out of a session.

Skywalker and Epic has made boards like this. I liked the one from Skywalker. Epics new board I haven't tried, but it seem to have most of what I am missing. I'll use those boards as inspiration and make a better one ;)

This is why I will have a small double concave for more comfort in landings and and a slightly s-shape to the outline, to hopefyu7ully gain a little low end. I just don't know if the s-shape will give more drag or help the low end because of less board surface to press through the water. Maybe it's rubbish and I'll only use the board once and then use it as a table, but then at least I've tried it. If it works it should come into production ;)

I hope you understand my idea know. Help me make the best compromise.

I'll build the core in wood and the rest in fiberglass. Both my farther and I have experience with those materials. Is that a bad idea?
