Wider is better, longer is good too. If you've got a router, make the tips '3D' so they flex easy. And ... pilfer a plan from an existing light wind board. Traig aka MonkeyAir just goes to town on a bit of plywood and makes them square, IIRC... pretty hard to stuff up apparently.
Probably easier just to buy one. Short wide boards shouldn't give too much problem with shipping...
