vacuum pumps need advises ???

Postby mattthieu » Fri May 03, 2013 4:47 am

need advices !

going soon to vacuum my first board and, talked to a guy that is selling vacuum cleaners for a living, he told me, continus run for a shop vac is risky cause it might just burn out or better ( for the machine, not for me ) might turn out for overheat protection. IF it happens my board is garbage and i would loose the core, the few glass carbon epoxy hours of shaping......ect

so, mot so hot about using shop vac.

same thing about playing around with fridge compressor ( IF old fridge ( so not to expensive )) then it might just over heat or burn in the midle of vaccuming with half cured resin. ( and besides really dont want to spend hours bulding it ( not skiled machine wise ).

SO question is, IF you know something about vaccum pumps, are using, ect, what pump could you recommand me ( there are thousands out there ). anyone tried a venturi vacuum generator yet ? ( it uses pressured air suply from nail gun compressor for ex, witch i have !!!! )

thanks everyone

fridge pump works a treat. just fit a vacuum switch so it turns on and off when the vacuum gets low.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adjustable-Univ ... ff&vxp=mtr

easy peasy.

Care must be taken to get as little vacuum leaks as possible. do it right and yourl suck down you work and it will hold vacuum for the duration without leaking.... very hard though. Do it wrong and your leaks will be greater than the little fridge pump can keep up with and yourl never get down to the correct vacuum.

i think i found the ultimate easy thing to go with : http://www.tooltopia.com/robinair-34970.aspx

it's a vacuum generator that work on pressured air ( i have a compressor ).

so, basicaly, compressor is trustable it can run for long time ( days of roofing ) and this thing produces vacuum for low dollars.

it can run indefinitly as it uses like 60 psi pressure and my compressor produces 150 in the tank so, compressor wont work continusly..

and, ( i need a pressure gauge ) if the vacum produced is to important, i could ajust the pressure from compressor set it lower and produce lover vac !!

better cheaper : http://www.harborfreight.com/air-vacuum ... 96677.html

Cheaper is NOT always Better !!!

and that vacuum generator is a BAD idea.

.
I got a Used/discarded fridge pump on a beer-keg for small jobs ; built it
20 years ago and it's STILL running Strong. Can pull 20Hg with No problems.
When my main pump relay failed one day, it was that free pump on a beer-keg
that finished the job.

Where do you live that Ya can't get a FREE refrigerator ?

...
SO -- you Really DON"T get-it, do Ya ?

people toss refrigerators because a relay or Door is busted ...

YEA -- you better go get that $15 vacuum pump from
harbor-freight, there such a reputable company and-all ...

Then rely on a poorly made piece of Chinese CRAP to hold
vacuum on the board Ya just spent all those hours building .

Your right --- what could Possibly be wrong with that ?

hey, no need to be all superior with me just cause you got some knoledge that i dont !

there are no mooving pieces in that vacuum device so, even if crapy, the only crapy thing that could go wrong is not deep enought vacuum, if it works, then it will work that's it, and, you and your superior knoledge say : bad idea, just like that, i ask why, you dont give me any ( well any fact and intelectual reason for it ) so, i have resonable doubts.....

as for frigdes, yep, some peole here travel around with there trucks and pay 25 dollars to get all used fridges and then they sale them to shops that are rebuilding them so f*** no, there are just littlt chance i get my hands on a fridge compressor for cheap ( let's say a working one uder 50 bugs is utopia ).

then, what in the world would indicate that a COMPRESSOR that worked for the last 12 years ( and is possibly not working well cause then, it would'n't be in the trash ) would possibly continue working , REVERSE way ( so it was not build for that use ) ????

so, dont trust a device with no mooving part that will do what it's intended to do and it's new BUT trust a thing that is 12 or 15 years old, and would do thing it's not intended to do ??

is that it ?

matthieu,
if you think your compressor can drive the harbor freight gizmo then give it a try.
.... i believe they recommend something like 100psi and 4-5 cfm.
they do not mention vacuum flow rate so probabaly not much. You may need a vaccum resevoir to keep up with the bag.

it's likely the compressor will still need to run continuously if you dont add some sort of check valve between the bag and your vacuum source ( otherwise the bag will always vent thru the venturi )

you'll be spending a lot more time and money on the stuff you put into the bag than anything you end up using for vacuum. So just be sure to do a test run and see if you like it.

however, you did ask the question.
and despite the attitude, billie gave you a straight answer.
one that plummet and i both agree with, btw.
any country that has electricity also has old refrigerators with old compressors that turn out to be quite reliable. i'd be very surprised if a 10 minute search of your local classifieds did not uncover a free fridge. (none of us came up with this idea, its just seems to be one that works well)

no worries.
you still get to choose.
