hi
something a cool boardbuider from montreal told me about, making grip from epoxy and salt, why, transparent grip to ride the board strapless, waxless !!
my first atempt, hotcoat and salt grip.
cant wait for tomorow to wash the salt away !

Not really news . Thats pretty much the standard way of gripping windsurf boards and raceboards.
On a surfboard I have done it and would not recommend it over wax. It shreds your feet and will take skinn off your arms when you carry the board. And when you fall onto it or get hit by it rips skinn off.
Its fine on strapped boards where you spend little time out of straps , but on a strapless board, your feet are going to suffer.

stupid question. doesn't the salt melt out when water hits it? does it just leave the resin behind hardened into a course shape?

I think it's called a 'sugar' deck.
apparantly sugar was the more popular texture additive.
i think salt leaves the deck a bit sharper than sugar.
sugar attracts ants
both are intended to wash away once the resin cures.
in the old days, it was always polyester resin.
i did not know folks were sprinkling salt on $100/gal epoxy.
commercially you can buy something call Re-DeK that uses acryllic resin and plexiglass 'salt' that does not wash off
...go figure

Wonder how Kosher salt would work on Gel coat for none slip on my deck of my boat? Possibilities, interesting. If to rough on parts I suppose it would hold wax real good.

I have a second hand beater board that has a salt and epoxy deck (from the previous owner). I definitely recommend against it. The soles of my feet are fine, but it gives me cuts other places, particularly hands, top of feet and ankles. Also, I find it so grippy that repositioning my feet is harder. With wax, you can slide your feet a little bit but still have grip, I find it really hard to slide my feet on the salt deck.

but, that's not something that will cut you or harm you !
the salt is going to be washed away, it will disolve into water !
and, it's right now far to thick, i will sand it down to nearly same thicknes then the rest of the deck ( okok i made it to thick ) and the sanding process will give it just the softnes/grip ratio needed to grip my feets.
facts : i dont ride my board on my stomach or elbows nor other parts off my body, i ride my board on my feets, AND i wear bootys.
no wax, no sand, transparent.
