that is the idea off salt !
you saqnd down to exose salt grains and water washes them away ! grip ! works great.
yep, glassed top and bottom, not one bubble, jsut uneven sanding, wanted to try it before sanding it !
actually i like the weight ! get's down the chops easy , top of board does not fly away !
next one will be 3 plys of 3mm ply, center one hollowed, glas top and bottom ( founf 3 oz s glass) and carbon tape if to flexy !
on production, next one will be hand layup then baged to get better edge wrap !

i think simon and others were suggesting ways to apply a final coat that is thinner.
the salt sits on top w/o needing to sand.
applied with a sifter, the salts grains are less likely to be encapsulated.
and the application more uniform.
but, as you are figuring out...it all works.

I didn't realy look into exact procedure how decks with salt were made, but was sure, that one should apply an even layer of epoxy to the deck, than make an even layer of salt (which you dried in an owen or in a pot) with a sifter.
The amount of salt should be just enough to cover the surface (rather a bit less, than making an excess). Dry salt should soak up epoxy and you should end up with finish similar to griptape except white/semi-transparent. No sanding, no washing the salt away.
It seems to me, I will have to make a sample to test this theory.
Keep on with good debates!

Salt is great for wake skates when you're wearing shoes. Don't know about surf boards but it gives me a rash when I screw up on the wake skate and the stars align completely not in myth favor
Thanks for bringing it back up. While someone called it old hat it's good to refresh old ideas.
Some dissolving happens. Let the epoxy coat set up but not cure then apply salt and press in as needed depending on how set up the resin is

the hole idea is that disolving WILL happen, it's itend to !
this way you have a grip mae ONLY from epoxy, it'a clear, it's skid less, NOT abrasive to skin ( it's smooth like a mild shark skin ).
i used it on a new board i build, and, from two meters distance you cant tell where the grip is and where not ! but i'm not, never had ( tried it hours yesterday ) slied a foot !
less expensive grip ou will ever find !
only draw back : i put some straps ( just straps ) on the board and jumped around, and, with only grip it's a bit hard on the landings, next time i'm going to laminate some kind of foam over the glass, maybe 4mm cork ? maybe eva ? or water resistant workshop flooring from homedepot !

I think you misunderstood me. When you are making it, the salt or sugar will dissolve in the epoxy, thats why suggest letting it set up first

ok i got it !
well, sorry !
are you shure it will disolve ? i did 3 grips yet and, the 2 first i did not let the epoxy rest before aplying the salt, epoxy cured and grip is good.
then the third i was going to go with a hot coat and after one hour or so decide to do a grip, touched the epoxy, was still mildly sticky, aplied salt in thick layer and forced it in with a small 3 inch roller !
worked allso well.
diference : the 2 fist had a thick coat of salt, had to sand them down, the third requierd no sanding ! cause epoxy does not get UP in the salt due to capilarity effect.
so yes, your right, the right way to do it, i think, is to let resin settle for a while and then apply !

Just another idea.
I have done this on my 3 hydrofoils and a wakeskate.
I almost always wear booties but barefoot is ok also.
I paint the deck with a good polyurethane, then sprinkle brown sugar as evenly as possible to just cover everywhere.
Let it dry completely.
Paint a second coat as thin as possible but covering all the sugar, your rollar will need to be cleaned well or tossed.
Go ride, the sugar will melt leaving super small volcanoes, I love the grip and have no probs with either to much or to little.
I have heard guys say it is to aggressive but mine seems just fine plus I really like the board contact esp when foiling.
Never tried either epoxy, polyester or salt, maybe next time?
Just another idea.

in my hydrofoil board i place Marine deck fluorecent tape in 1 inchx 4 inches long strips all over the deck with 20mm in between spaces i rounded all the corners so the tape wouldt peel easy .
the tape is like a one sticky heavy duty sanding tape.
then i rubbed candle wax to cover the grit so it wouldnt chaffe me.
it grippy, and cheap costed abou 5 buck for the whole deck.
holp it helps!
