Hello, I think I read here somewhere that a board builder recommends installing a "vent plug" in boards. I did a search but did not find? If you have info about this please share ideas and products, explanations. I have a board that no matter how much I try to dry it out, off season, it always seems to open up again and bleed salt h2o. As it is airex core I don't worry to much but I have another with cheap strofoam? core and would like it to last. Is this vent plug like a one way valve of some sort? Thanx R H
hi, the purpose of the vent is to prevent excessive expansion/contraction of the air inside your board. hollow boards and those made with low density foam ( <2 lb/ft^3) can easily expand/deform with small changes in the pressure difference across the skin.
typical causes: the unpressurized cargo bay of a commercial airline or trunk of your car on a sunny day. also cheap XPS cores with poor bond strength to the skin
the vent is not intended to be a drain plug for leaks from other places in the skin. but if you have a leak you intend to repair AND the internal structure of your board will allow ait to pass thru the core ..then why not use it?
once the skin expands regardless of the reason, delam from the core is likely and things go downhill from there.
i believe solid cores strong enough to be used for kite-boards do not need vents. but sandwich skins on low density eps cores may find them useful. pink XPS cores could use them but there is no way for the air to migrate thru the board.
if a board is layed on the beach or in a car long enough there will be a large amount of pressure inside of it... If the glass is that thick you will loose feel of the board. ( won't feel like a surfboard) Yes we can make anything a person wants but I just think that for 14 dollars that is cheep insurance so the board won't crack. The thicker the board the more pressure it will make.
The first place that it will crack is around inserts or fin boxes, just a hair line crack. And then water slowly seeps in and delam happens over time... think of a zip lock bag with zipped shut and tossed on the ground in the sun for the day. what happens? it inflates and condensation happens inside. Well if a board can not breath what is going to happen. It is a sealed shell .
