How hard would it be to build myself a "Engine harness"?
I could order te "Impression kit" to build a mould of my lower back.
Then do a layup of carbon, and embed the straps in between the layers of carbon. I have an old harness to strip, and use the straps and spreader bar.
Would this work, or would the straps melt in contact with epoxy?
Any advice on the layup of carbon? How many layers?

Could certainly be done.
You can make your own moldable plastic sheet from PET pellets to save money, or cover your back with a plastic sheet and use 5 minute epoxy and cloth to make a mold, or plaster or whatever.
Good luck if you do it!
Edit: Don't embed the straps in the core, it has a high risk to tear them where they come out, or delaminate the core, or probably both. If you make the shell with slots in it for straps, you could lace them through like you would through a buckle, easier maintenance etc.
