POW snowkiteboard 2015 :D

Oi!
Since our local snowkiting conditions and at the places I have been the past years is usually deep dry powder, Aboards Reverse 161 cm, which is actually 158 cm and quite narrow, didn't work for me (85- 90 kg), so I made it like it should be done:
166 x 32.5 cm, 2.55 kg
Like Reverse, it has small camber in the middle and rocker tips (I don't know, why they call it reverse :D).
It has super flexy tips and flexy middle, so should be very good for pow, and not so good on hardpack.
Anyways, I am leaving for Norway on 1st Apr., getting excited, and I'll see there how this board turned out.
p.s.: this is my first snowboard build

Good stuff, congrats

How did you make sidewalls? What's the core, etc?
Thx

Core is made out of two 2,5 mm thick plyboards (paulownia vener with poplar in the middle). Tapered down to 1 sheet from the end of the inserts to the widest part of the board.
Since this is my first SB I decided not to do sidewals. Since the center has much more flex than I anticipated, this might be the right decision, but let's wait and see how she handle's.
The idea is to see how the outline and rocker work, which parts has to be reinforced and how much, than I will trie to nail this on the 2nd board I make. Maybee I will trie to do the sidewalls on the 3rd.
Now I just chamfered the edge with a 30° router and gave it some paint and finished it with a boat varnish.

Gallery is now public
I've added some detail photos of the edge.
It is still a bit hairy, but because of the same reason I didn't do it out of ABS- it's a proto board and no need for any finishing touches (extra labour).

Nice looking board. Not sure the Paulonia will stand the beating though. I have made 20 or so boards with
poplar strips and ash or maple sidewall. I use them on all kinds of hard icy surfaces here in eastern ontario and no problems with the sidewall delam at all. Compared to production boards which can rip aprt in one session on ice.
The ash sidewall is better than any plastic...don't bother with the abs or ptex. I use ash or maple just like you would abs so it has a consistend thickness along the edge.

Have fun.

Hi Stan!
What do you use to seal the edges?

I just put a light coat of varnish. But you with ash or maple I think you don't have to worry. I never re-coated boards that are 4 years old and they look like it's all down to bare wood. I don't leave them stuck in a snowbank when I store them though. The epoxy bond to the good hardwood seems very robust.

Nice work Stan...

I've seen a race board project, how did you glue a veneer? With epoxy, PU or polyester resin?

Also, is that some sort of a special foam and premade boxes? Looks great.

Thx
D.

Thanks.

The foam in the raceboard is 1.5lb eps from homedepot. The veneer was vacuum bagged down with epoxy. I made the boxes as well. It's a pain to make boxes so I suggest getting Chinook tuttles if you can.
